What to get next?

Recommended Posts

I collect all video games and would like to get an Atari computer. What is the best to get? I'd like to get top of the line and a first release of it if possible. I want a system that has the largest game selection for it. Are the Atari computer games better the atari console games?

Off course, Atari 8bit computers has the most largest game selection and the best versions. So far.

Well a 64k atari will run mostly everything and you have a few choices.

800xl - 2nd generation design, brown and brushed steel look, less mushy keyboard than xe

65xe - 3rd generation design, a little more modern looking

xegs - same as 65xe electronically, but game console design with detachable short-corded keyboard(I have one of these with an extension cable, I think its the same as the old pc gameports)

Then you have the 130xe which has 128k, but I don't think too many programs require or use this extra memory, but I'm sure some demos do and maybe a couple games. At least one demo I know, the numen demo needs 320k which would require a modification to a stock system. I believe you can get new in box 130xes(NTSC) at Best Electronics, but they are pricey compared to used ones.

Then there is also the 1st generation Atari 800 which can be at 48k with no modification, it won't run the 64k games, but the majority of games are 48k or less. It might have the best keyboard of the bunch, and is pretty good looking in a retro sort of way.

Many of us have more than one system, but if you are collecting a lot of other systems that might not be an option. So many Atari 8 bits to choose from, it's hard to decide. Hope this helps instead of making it harder! :) :ponder:

I think the 1200xl is the most collectable Atari computer. Get one of these and a 1050 disk drive and you will have a really nice vintage game system. The 800 is the first Atari computer. It has four game ports and plays most games. One of these plus an 810 disk drive would be nice to show. If you want a very compatible Atari that needs no mods, it's tough to beat the XE Game System. It will play just about anything and the composite output is the best tv-out on a stock Atari. My everyday Atari is an XEGS.

It's a toss up between the good 'ole 800 (48k) that lets you play a few older games and those with four players vs the 800XL (check OS is rev C?) or 65XE with 64K which let you play many more games, and the 130XE (128K) which has a few additional games that use the extra memory. My baby is a 130XE so that's what I'd go for unless you are into cartridges, as some brainiac designer put the cartridge port round the back :)

Yes Atari 8-bit Computer's have better games that the Atari consoles (2600), there I said it ;) :D
