Kernal #1 Posted October 23, 2009 So does any one have the original source code for Journey to the planets.. We were wondering if there is any way we could make it more modern... possibly even make a PC version of it.. or even a more modern version for the 8bits... any one wanna help? Ross PK #2 Posted October 23, 2009 This is a great idea. It's one of my all time favorite games. Unfortunatley for some reason several people on here hate it though, can't really understand why. Were you thinking of keeping it 2D or making it 3D?
miker #3 Posted October 23, 2009 I would vote for remake... on Atari. Of course with better graphics/music/fx. There arew many a8 emulators and everyone can play it then on his fave platform... But I don't think if there will be anybody to do this (but I wish I was wrong).
+doctorclu #4 Posted October 24, 2009 Like it, not sure if the source exists (any advice out there on decompiling?) Of course it was such a basic game that rewriting it doesn't seem like it would be all that difficult to beat.
+therealbountybob #5 Posted October 24, 2009 (edited) It's a unique game with a lot of charm (and a nice tune!). The remake could feature new puzzles to make it interesting and how about a shoot'em up part during the space travel Yes do it on the Atari, my coding skills are not that advanced so could only offer creative help and moral support Edited October 24, 2009 by therealbountybob
PeteD #6 Posted October 24, 2009 looks like a really fun game. Something like Space Taxi that when I got on C64 in the 80s me and a friend (STE 86 on here) looked at it and thought, "well, that looks horrible", then spent about 8 hours solid playing it If you've not seen Space Taxi it's a similar kind of inertia/thrust fly your ship around and land it while bypassing obstacles. It's more of a single screen per level (you just have to go pick up little guys from one "pad" and take them to another "pad", sometimes they want to go "up") but there are LOTS of levels. I think a remake of this would be nice. Maybe for the "coding competition" as mentioned in the C64 Vs Atari thread Pete
Wrathchild #7 Posted October 24, 2009 not sure if the source exists (any advice out there on decompiling?) Hi, I'd done this in the past (as I begun porting it to the 5200) so here's the reverse-engineered source. Regards, Mark j2p_a8.zip

Hi, I'd done this in the past (as I begun porting it to the 5200) so here's the reverse-engineered source. Regards, Mark Oh I love to hear of reverse engineering! So what did it take to get as far as you got, and how is the 5200 project coming along?
Wrathchild #9 Posted October 24, 2009 So what did it take to get as far as you got, and how is the 5200 project coming along? With the A8, the aim was to get something to be able to recreate the 16K ROM image. So the disassembly and then making a project out of it was only a few hours' task. (The true art being the coming to an understanding of the code and so giving labels appropriate names, leading to more understanding ). For the 5200 I'd done the translation to a 5200 ROM and change the chip mappings so that the code runs. I'd starting the coding for remapping the joystick handling but can to a decision that instead of trying to squeeze this into the existing 16K I would have to simply have these extra routines in a fraction of a 32K sized ROM for the 5200. Shouldn't take too much to finish it off, but busy on some other things at the moment. Regards, Mark
andylama #10 Posted October 26, 2009 Always loved this game. Would love to see a remake/update, using the incredible programming techniques all you code/hardware ninjas have discovered over the past couple of decades! I'd pay good money for J2P2 on a cart. Unfortunately, I'm in no position to offer useful assistance in this venture. I hope it happens!

Yes, now is there any way to get in touch with jack verson the original author.. i have read the faq of journey to the planets and he said he talked to the author. I have several friends who work at blizzard and we were thinking not only an updated atari version.. but how about a multi-player one with network capabilities for the PC? Ill work on the atari version for now.. using the source code provided by mark.. and thus it begins. -=Rick=-
Shawn Jefferson #12 Posted October 27, 2009 I'd pay good money for J2P2 on a cart. You could probably put Journey to the Planets on an Atarimax Flashcart.

adminchuck #14 Posted December 8, 2009 I'd pay good money for J2P2 on a cart. I would too, definitely! What is a good price? I have a J2P cartridge. It has the front and back of the box with it that is how I got it. There is also a tape with it that is suppose to be a back up copy or something.
