Heaven/TQA #1 Posted October 25, 2009 last couple of days I had some time to start with the intro... here are small bits and pieces... only missing is the online manual like in MetaLlamas... after that is done I will link everything together... Not sure if the sample routine will stay in the main game but I will see... there is only one main issue in the game itself and that's to replicate the random routine of the VIC version. analmux #4 Posted October 25, 2009 Looks/sounds interesting. Especially the music: it has a strong character. Anyway, any in-game work of progress?
Heaven/TQA #5 Posted October 25, 2009 in terms of a-class issues with the game I can only see the random issue. as you see while playing Gridrunner that the zappers are firing always at the same time and the same rate. b-class issue is my wish to include sample playback at various places. timofonic #9 Posted October 26, 2009 So this emulates a VIC-20 inside A8? Same graphics as the original so not getting use of A8 hardware? What's the difference with the C64 version?
+GroovyBee #10 Posted October 27, 2009 So this emulates a VIC-20 inside A8? Same graphics as the original so not getting use of A8 hardware? Not quite. The original VIC-20 version was converted back into assembly language source code and then modified to run using the A8's hardware. There is no emulation of a VIC-20 going on. What's the difference with the C64 version? Over to the experts on that...
Heaven/TQA #11 Posted October 27, 2009 the key of the project was to have the best version running on the a8 and the best version is the VIC20 version... the released Llamasoft A8 version is disappointing, for me the c64 version, too... so that is the reason to take the VIC version back to A8. The A8 is running the original VIC20 code so the gameplay remains and stays in play. A8 is simulating the unexpanded VIC20 screen while some adjustments had to be made to the code, just to name sound routines and some DLIs. The player ship uses hardware sprites on top of the char to get it green and etc et etc.... so actually the A8 hardware is used. it is not so simple at it looks at the first glance... but it works good. XXL is doing BBC and Apple 2 ports while me is doing the VIC20 ports...
Rybags #12 Posted October 27, 2009 The most obvious difference is 40 columns (64/A8 official releases) vs the 22 columns of the VIC-20. I think the ideal situation would be to have some of the sound effects from the C-64 versions incorporated - also might be an idea to look at the sequel (Matrix) there too. Heaven/TQA #14 Posted October 27, 2009 Jeff itself says that the VIC version is the definitive one... check out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqxY3PkfT1A&NR=
TMR #15 Posted October 27, 2009 What's the difference with the C64 version? Over to the experts on that... Minter himself has said that the C64 port isn't as good as the VIC 20 original, it may be a bit more chunky graphically but the game itself is more playable in the original form in part because it has a faster pace. The same is true of Metagalactic Llamas which heaven already ported, there's a C64 version of that (done by a friend of Minter's) but the VIC version is the better one to play. patjomki #16 Posted November 20, 2009 last couple of days I had some time to start with the intro... here are small bits and pieces... only missing is the online manual like in MetaLlamas... after that is done I will link everything together... Any news on that? Just tried both programs on my real ATARI (PAL system) today. The intro screen works fine but the other file results in a distorted title screen (gridrunner logo). Anyway, good work up to now and I still hope that it will be finished soon (still enjoy Venus Express and Metagalactic Llamas). Heaven/TQA #17 Posted November 20, 2009 I have not much free time at the moment but I have still not 100% decided what I will done with the manual text. In Meta Llama I have included the text after the intro but I am tending to use a scene notepad... but the one I have choosen does need an MPT music file... so... stay tuned... I have my 800 XL and 130xe setup, too... so I will check as well on real hardware. cheers,
patjomki #18 Posted November 21, 2009 so... stay tuned... I have my 800 XL and 130xe setup, too... so I will check as well on real hardware. Great to see the project isn't abandoned. Regards, patjomki
Heaven/TQA #19 Posted November 21, 2009 no.no.... it is not camceled... it is just lacking free time (searching for new job & moving flat) and therefor lacking inspiration.
Heaven/TQA #20 Posted November 22, 2009 ok... have a look... boot this disc... and then load the "README.COM". I will include this reader in the final release... hope that's ok... I figured out how I can edit the text and compile the running final file... so the end is near... Miker... any unused MPT file which fits for Gridrunner manual reading? gridrunner.atr.zip
