Can't connect to Xbox live while connected to Windows 7

Recommended Posts

Bloody thing!!

I've spent hours trying to set up my Xbox to go on Xbox Live through my PC's internet connection and not a thing! I've tried everything I can think of.

I had it working for a while with XP but that stopped working a couple of weeks ago. Just installed Windows 7 a couple of days ago and I've been trying all day. Has anyone figured it out yet? Windows is detecting that something is connected to the network cable but the Xbox can't connect to the PC. Probably just my settings but I can't figure out what they should be.

I need some help before I go crackers!

Never mind. Found the solution on YouTube. NONE of the sites I visited told me that all I had to do was bridge my LAN and Wireless connections. Once I did that, everything worked perfectly. Didn't even need to switch on ICS, like every friggin site (including xbox.com) had been telling me to do.:x

I don't have Windows 7 (yet) but I'm curious about this problem. Could you post a link to the YouTube video that solved the problem for you?

If he did what I did initially to get my 360 connected to the internet through my PC you just go to:

Start> Control Panel> Network Connections

and then highlight the two connections. I had my 360 hard wired to an ethernet port in the PC,

so in my case I chose that ethernet connection and the connection from my PC to the modem,

right click and choose bridge connection.

You don't need Windows 7 to do this.

I don't think your computers OS has anything to do with weather or not you can hook up with the 360 (could be wrong though) Just make sure your router settings are set up right, you're using a compatible security, and your passwords are right.

I had an old router back on my old -box and the only way I could talk to it was to hook directly to it, course, wireless was a lot newer back then too...

I wouldn't have thought that the OS was the problem. The problem is the crappy information out there. I'm surprised that Microsoft's own site seems to provide the same defective information.

I did have it running, kind of, in XP before installing Win7. But that was using information found on walkthroughs and it never worked right. I had to boot the Xbox straight after the PC and leave it on when switching to the PC otherwise I'd have to reboot BOTH again to get the link back. Then it just stopped working altogether.

Since finding out that all I had to do was bridge the connections, it's worked faultlessly. The only problem I have is a bit of 'stickiness' when playing online - wireless is nowhere near as good as wired. If I can finally get the money together to pay the rest of the pre-ordered COD Limited Edition machine then that can be my main online machine in the living room next to the router while the old one can be my dev machine (and I'll hack the drive for single player games ;)).

And for the record, this is the video I used:

It seems to me I had some problems with this way of connecting. I can't remember the details because it was so long ago, you could connect to Live and play online and all that, but I had problems sharing some files from the PC to the 360 using the bridged connection I think. All that was solved when I got a wireless router/modem.
