Classic Cooperative games

Recommended Posts

In the coming classic console - computer gaming fair in Spain Retromadrid 2010, the organisers want to prepare a "circuit" in which couples of gamers (like father - son) try different classic cooperative games for 5-10 mins.

Most of the games we can think of are typical beat or shoot'em ups. The tentative list has no games for Atari 2600, Coleco, Intelly, Vectrex or anything from NES downwards, which is a shame.

Just to illustrate the idea, some of the games already "selected" are Bubble Bobble, Snow Bros, Gauntlet, Mario Bros ... sure there are more cooperative games out there!. Btw, the games have to very simple to understand, to be able to play several games of the circuit.

We'd very much appreciate suggestions specially for the most classic systems :)

Demon Attack for Intellivision had a really cool co-op selection. The control of the ship flipped back and forth between the first and second controllers during game-play.

Well, Mario Bros. on the 2600 is co-op.

Other 2600 co-ops:

G.I. Joe Cobra Strike (I think)

Double Dragon

Joust

Rampage

Some NES co-ops:

Gauntlet II

Swords & Serpents

Battletoads

Rush'N Attack

Contra

Mario Bros.

Yep, Cobra Strike does have co op. Also, Party Mix can be played as co op on many of the games. Street Racer has a co op mode. Omega Race can be played co op with one player as pilot and one as the gunner. Atlantis 1 has a co op mode, I think, but the Acropolis Command Post (read: middle gun) is inactive.

Dodge It!, baby!

This one looks very funny!! I don't have a Fairchild Chanel F system ... was this game ported to other consoles?

Afraid not. It's a Channel F exclusive. We need some one to create an Atari 2600 version.

Dracula on the Inty has an awesome co-op section - you start of a 2p game as cops vs. Drac, but if Drac bites the cop, the cop turns in a warefolf and has to help Drac get the victims.

Asteroids or Centipede on the 7800 both have awesome co-op modes.

A great NES game that is also 2 player co-op is Rodland. The Pal version is very expensive, but the Famicom is pretty cheap($20-30). Plus, the Famicom version is mostly in english so it is very easy to play. I can't say enough about this game, it is a cross between Bubble Bobble & Mr.Dos Castle. One of my favorite top 3 NES game.

Another good co-op run & gun for NES is Heavy Barrel. Very good 2 player game.

Some older sports games had co-op modes that were pretty fun; at least my brothers and I had fun.

NBA Jam isn't quite classic (Genesis/SNES) but is probably among the best co-op games of all time.

I'm guessing that it doesn't quite hold up very well anymore, but we had a lot of fun with Harlem Globetrotters (NES), which also has a co-op mode.

Some people claim that Joust was "cooperative", but whenever my brother and I jammed on that game in the arcade, it was Deathmatch City.

My favorite 2-player game of all time is Kings Of The Beach for the NES.

The NHL series for the Sega Genesis, where one-timing was first available, is pretty killer for 2-player gaming as well. Slow-mo'ing those replayed one-timer goals is so sweet.

Double Dragon II was nice as well.. and on games where you could accidentally hit your partner, I'd try to draw the enemy to one half of the screen while the other player would take the other (like the top half, the other take the bottom half).
