Your opinion, top five Sega CD games.

Recommended Posts

I recently acquired a Sega CD, finally, and I want your opinions.. what are the top five games?

No bashing, this system does actually have some truly great games among the shovelware.

The only two games I have played on it, and enjoyed, were Wirehead (hilarious factor) and Silpheed.

How is Rebel Assault?

Any input is greatly appreciated!

Shining Force

Lunar

Lunar II

Silpheed

Snatcher

Other games I give very high praise for:

Eternal Champions

Vay

Android Assualt

Dark Wizaed

Robo Aleste

Soul Star

Lords of Thunder

Haven't played 'em all but from what I own (in no particular order)...

Heart of the Alien

Terminator

Bram Stoker's Dracula

Silpheed

Spider-Man vs. Kingpin

I need to play more of Heimdall to form an opinion on that one.

Mortal Kombat would have been good if not for the excruciating load times (especially when fighting Goro!)

Rebel Assault is unplayable for me due to the controls. Best played on the Mac (or PC, but I can't vouch for that version).

Sonic CD gets a big "meh" from me. I just prefer the first two on Genesis.

Outside of the RPGs, my top favorites:

Lords of Thunder

Android Assault (Bari-Arm)

Flashback

Heart of the Alien: Out of This World I & II

Eternal Champions

But of course, that's a rough list and off the top of my head.. If I had to think about it harder, I'd expand it into a "favorite ten" list, with these as well:

Silpheed

Batman Returns

Final Fight CD

Pitfall

Sonic CD

And of course, that's even rough.. I know I'm missing something.

Keio Flying Squadron is good if you like shooters.

Popful Mail is a pretty good platformer, but right now I'm bogged down in the middle where they throw like five boss fights in a row at you with very little advancement in between. Fortunately I'm playing on an emulator and can use save states to make those fights less annoying.

Thanks for the input guys!

Silpheed was always one of my favs. I remember my Cousin always playing Corpse Killer, which was a TERRIBLE game, lol.

The cool thing about the SCD is that it has no copy protection. Wink, wink, nudge, nudge, say no more...

But, my top five fave games for it are...

1. Snatcher - Good luck finding an actual copy (I own one! HA!), but man, is it cool. Just something you have to experience, really.

2. Eternal Champions Challenge From The Darkside - A MASSIVE update to the Genesis game. It's AWESOME, one of the best fighters on the early Sega systems. This one still sees play from me all the time.

3. Out of This World/Heart of the Alien - Great games. The 3DO is really the definitive version of Out of This World, but Heart of the Alien was only available on the SCD, so this is a must have. Kind of odd, but once you get used to it, it's a cinematic tour-de-force that you'll never forget.

4. Shining Force CD - This one will consume your life once you start playing. Amazing music, great colorful sprite graphics, and a long, twisting story. I LOVE this game.

5. Penn and Teller's Smoke and Mirrors - This was finished but never released. Sad, as it's a great game. Fortunately, if you know where to look, you can find it pretty easily around the net. It's not really a game, per se, but it IS something every Sega CD owner should experience. Desert Bus RULES!

great thread. This one and some others popping up recently, finally got me off my rear and hooking my SegaCD up to give snatcher a shot. I really liked most of the story/atmosphere, but the gameplay was rather painful or even seemingly random at times. Actually the worst of Snatcher was an incredibly long MetalGear-style monologue at the end instead of a boss battle. not to mention a lame, to-be-continued ending.

It was a really neat game, but I can't really say it's on my top 5--I'm pretty sure it's on my top 10 somewhere though. And no, I don't own a real copy.

since I haven't yet played my Lunars, or the shining force game, I probably shouldn't formulate a top 5 of my own just yet. I do remember liking Sonic CD.

OK, I'll start with SonicCD.

I love Penn & Teller's Smoke and Mirrors, although I can imagine me being 1 of the 5 people who do.. ;-)

And...

Oh, that's all I have and all I have tried for my SegaCD...

I got deep into my 3DO (which I got just a bit before the SegaCD) and haven't gotten back to the Sega yet...

It's on the list tho...

Good to know what I should be looking for! :-)

Sonic CD: I was one of the few people for whom Sonic 2 and 3 were a disappointment after the original Sonic the Hedgehog. I like Sonic CD because there is no useless secondary character following me everywhere, and the game has great music.

Final Fight CD: If you like beat-em-ups, this is a great game. It's no Streets of Rage 2, but nothing else is.

Popful Mail: Really cool platformer with RPG elements.

Snatcher: A supremely awesome adventure game. Might be the best game on the system.

The Lunar games are of course great if you like RPGs. I do, but I haven't had a chance to play through those games yet. The Sega CD also has a great version of NHL 94, which is hailed by some as the greatest hockey game of all time.

Like you, I came late to the Sega CD party, and have only been playing in earnest for a few years. Lots of interesting games, and with no copy protection you can definitely try before you buy.

Rebel Assault is rough. If you've played Rebel Assault II, this won't even register as playable at all. If you get it, put the CD to good use--holding your beer mug while you read the game's story online somewhere.

Whoa, whoa, whoa... did someone actually publish this, or is it pirate-only?

Not officially released but someone on Classic Gaming forums posted it a while back, it can also be "found" through torrent sites..............

I think it's somewhere in between those two options...
