we will be recording episode 50 tonight. there is still time for people to submit their listener mail and audio postcards to feedback(at)nowyoureplayingwith(dot)com

I'm sure I missed the cutoff, but I just sent you a e-mail. I had hoped to do a audio recording like promised, but this week at work was super busy and I never had a chance to do so. I'm sorry I was so late in submitting anything.

Cheers mate, much appreciated!

Here's a sample from a recent episode about TV licensed games: https://soundcloud.com/swainy-1/ra-team

I liked the Sound Cloud link. Well done. :)

Well, I've listened to a few shows and on the whole I've enjoyed them. The one thing that kind of grinds after a while though can be the sponsors and plugs. The one that got me most was episode 107. Over 9 minutes (!) at the very beginning and then a further 2 minutes talking about iTunes reviews and the forum. If this was the first show I'd listened to I think I might've given up! All that time with no real content and then asking for a review is asking for trouble!

I know you have to pay money for hosting and that money comes from sponsorship and those sponsors deserve a shout out but perhaps you could shorten the section a bit or spread it out through the episode?

Other than that, the only thing is that sometimes the sound levels are a bit wonky. Often the music is much louder than the spoken parts. Again, I understand. The electronic/chip music tends to be more cutting and comes from 'purer' sources while the talky parts are recorded from all different sources... It's a common issue on a lot of podcasts but, still, I think it bears mentioning. :)

All in all, though, I'm glad you jarred me into listening to the past few episodes. The topics are varied and it's nice to hear different thoughts from a varied crew. I particularly like all the 8 bit computer talk. Old computers and their games are my thing (as opposed to consoles) so that's all good. :)

If you're still reading (!), I have a suggestion. Would you consider a little segment specifically dedicated to new games for old systems? I know you often mention new games (Castlevania, Scramble 2015, Jim Bagley stuff!). It might just be nice to have a proper section though. There's a lot of new games on a weekly basis and there's very little 'specialised' coverage of new games on ANY podcast... It seems to me there's a lot of untapped content to be had there. :)

Anyway, keep up the good work. :)

No worries. It's my pleasure. I do really enjoy the programme and I appreciate having a good retro show from this side of the pond so it's nice to share my views with you.

Best of luck in your future plans with it. :)

PS: You should post in this thread at little more often about what is going on. That's what the other podcast guys seem to do... ;)

FTR, I highly doubt that the No Quarter announcement is leading up to an April Fool's Day joke. Think about it: many listeners probably saw the message and unsubscribed, just for the sake of maintenance. That wouldn't be a very bright idea to fool your listeners like that.

I was told by someone in the know that the reason there were two straight weeks without an episode was that Mike was battling a really nasty illness, and right when he thought he had shaken it it had relapsed and so he wanted to just concentrate on recovering (he did sound pretty rough during the last episode) and that they were going to be back soon, but the announcement that Carrington left pretty much makes that a moot point...

I'm really going to miss that podcast. It was a great one and I looked forward to having it to brighten up my Monday morning each week. :(

I'll check out Ten Pence to see if it can fill the gap....the earlier episodes had audio issues, but I downloaded the (recent) Dig Dug episode and I'll check it out at work tomorrow.

well... here it is.... 4 years and 50 episodes of content boiled down to one three hour podcast.

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed, especially nurmix who helped me out with a bit near the end.

I channel David Letterman in this episode since he will be retiring in May after 33 years on the air. He was my comedy hero when I was in high school in the early 90's, and I am going to miss that cranky SOB.

Jeremy Parish called the 7 minute episode on Wizards and Warriors a "deep dive."

I'll repeat that.

Jeremy Parish, of the Retronauts podcast, did a 7 MINUTE EPISODE on Wizards and Warriors, and called it a "DEEP DIVE."

Your Patreon dollars hard at work.

Glad to hear Retro Asylum is not forgotten. Feel like I'm live-tweeting the NYPWP podcast here.

My memorable David Letterman segment was a letter that was read on 1991, on a Friday. Many moons ago, our local BBS community had a running joke of just randomly saying "Bundt cake!!#@". Someone sent in a letter to David just saying "Bundt cake!". He read it, and a bunch of bundt cakes dropped from the ceiling on his head. The cameraman interrupts him after, and David says "Ham!", and ham rains down on on the camera guy. With lucky timing, I taped the segment on Betamax.

Only a handful of people(Citadel BBSers in 612) understood the origin of that bundt cake letter.

Well, they just made two quasi-cryptic posts on Facebook....one a still from the "Bring out your dead!" scene of Holy Grail -- specifically the "I'm not dead" part -- and another still from a movie that I've obviously either never seen or didn't care for, apparently hinting that the show is still going to happen.

Very weird.

No Quarter was (is?) one of the best, IMO; I hope this is just the requisite April Fool's prank. After the "Sorry Charlie" gag last year, maybe they figured everybody would really be on the lookout this year for another gag, so they decided to lay it on extra thick.

But then again, Mike Maginnis said the following on their FB page:

And no - this is not an April Fool's thing, though I really, really wish it were. Maybe it would have been better to wait until next week to make the announcement, but that would have been three weeks without a show and no explanation, just to avoid speculation about the timing. I felt you, the listeners, deserved better than that. Obviously, I can't prove it isn't, except to say so and assure you that on April 2, there will still be no more "No Quarter" podcast, unless Carrington decides to do it with a new co-host. Which isn't a bad idea, actually..

Seems to me, statements such as this kind of ruin any potential for a good "joke" vibe. It's like "hey guys, if you think I've been a bit off lately, it's because I've been diagnosed with a terminal illness and will be dead in a month. Sad, but nothing I can do. Thanks for the support!"

[a few days later]

"JUST KIDDING! Let's go get some hookers and blow!"

Some people seem to be touting Ten Pence Arcade as a "replacement" of sorts, but that doesn't help me much because I was listening to them anyway. Great show as well.

Alternate theory on the above statement and the ensuing "cryptic" hints: maybe they genuinely planned to cancel the show, but received enough of a listener reaction to make them reconsider.

Full disclosure...I'm not the most gullible person in the world, but...I totally fell for that last year. As absurd as the description was...well, it was the absurdity that made it so believable!

Well, Mike made a long post on FB basically saying he's deciding to continue the show thanks to listeners comments; he already found a new co-host (!); and that there was no bad blood, no April Fool's joke, or anything else planned....he had just been sick for a couple weeks and then Carrington decided to leave. Good to hear they are still going to be around! :)

(Now if I could just find a new co-host for MY podcast..... ;) )
