2 worthy video game podcasts

Recommended Posts

I'm a bit late to praise Ferg's latest ep. He continues to outdo himself!

I bought that closing song as soon as I could. Is that singer Murray Attaway? He did a solo song called "Under Jets" I quite like.

& I was hoping a bit you were going further with that "Ariel" tune. I got it off a borrowed 70s compilation & it grew on me, now I know it by heart.

"Way on the other side of the Hudson, deep in the bosom of Suburbia..."

Yes, Murray Attaway, good ear. His solo album is called In Thrall, it's really good. As are the 4 Guadalcanal Diary albums.

Thank you for the kind words, also Sean and S1500.

I remember when I listened to Z-Rock(remember that?) they had a frequent caller to the show named "Swoosh" who came to be a part of the schedule. No idea why I remember that. They also had "The Nightly Nuke" where they have a vote between 2 hated songs(like something by New Kids on the Block) and the winner gets part of the song played by an explosion sound.

Song of the week: "Let it Go". Heard it on AT26GBG and Kaneda's Pinball Podcast.

Or should I let that go?

A new podcast has arrived!

Lost Treasures of Gaming

Found this mentioned on Upper Memory Block. This one, looking at the episode titles, has some potential.

Looks like another good one, although I'm not quite ready to refer to Marble Madness or Dragon's Lair as "lost classics."

I forgot to mention this show on my last episode, Steve Cartwright was just on and they did a nice job with it. That's the only one I've listened to so far.

His main website is called OMG Nexus, which doesn't bode well. If he's aiming for thirteen-year-old female listeners, why is he interviewing brilliant eighties-game programmers? :D

I just hope he doesn't waste Cartwright's, Robinett's, etc. time with dumb questions or a lot of upspeak. Nah, I'm imagining too much. You bad-ass ninja castmasters have apparently spoiled me with quality. I trust your judgment, Ferg (of course), so I'm looking forward to listening to the Cartwright interview. I just hope he asks him about Frostbite, at the least. That game gets woefully skipped almost every time someone talks with the man.

You've got a point there, Rob...none of the games that I see in his episode list can be considered "lost" by any definition. Well, maybe Forbidden Forest and Mr. Robot...but then, they're certainly not lost on us C64 fanatics! Perhaps he just means "Games That Don't Require Constant Downloaded Updates or Phones with Screens in Them."

Thanks for the notification, S1500.

Anyone else picture Chuck Sommerville doing a bucket of blow during his interview? (ep 13) Whenever he stopped talking there was tons of excessive sniffing & coughing on his end, almost to a comical degree toward the end.

I listened to two episodes today (Steve Cartwright and Marble Madness/Mark Cerny) and very impressed. Not sure how this one hasn't been discovered until now ... the podcast has been around since July and there are 18 episodes.

Don't pass this one up. Looks like most (maybe all?) are interview related. I see Warren Robinett, Mark Turmell, Bill Hogue, etc.

Brad from Antic recently pointed out another new podcast, Remotely Interested (www.remotely-interested.com). The show has five episodes so far. On episode 5 the host interviews John Mathieson about Jaguar development, and I noted another episode was dedicated to the Amiga's video toaster. Looks like am interesting retro-themed show to check out.

Interesting. What's the RSS feed for it? Is there some general template for RSSfeed-izing SoundCloud accounts?

Looks like the show is on iTunes:

https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/remotely-interested.com/id1071989070

For any WordPress site (like Remotely-Interested.com) that has smart links enabled, you should be able to add "/feed" to the end of the URL to get the site's post feed. If that's not enabled, add "/?feed=rss2" and you should be able to find the feed.

SoundCloud feeds are a pain in the ass, but you can find them. Here is the default format:

http://feeds.soundcloud.com/users/soundcloud:users:#####/sounds.rss

The "######" represents the user's unique ID. Here's how you get that:

- Go to the SoundCloud page.

- View Source

- Search for "users:" (with the colon)

- Copy the number that appears after that.

- Paste that number into the URL above.

The SoundCloud RSS feed for that show is: http://feeds.soundcloud.com/users/soundcloud:users:76792137/sounds.rss

That's the least desirable way to subscribe to a show, but for shows that aren't on iTunes and don't have a working RSS feed on their website (or for shows that ONLY have a SoundCloud presense), it works.

I was able to find a RSS feed(the iTunes link), when I switched to the desktop version. I accessed it from my cell phone so I could subscribe right on there, on pOdCatcher.

I keep forgetting mobile versions of sites give you a version of the site, with the features/content you want removed.

The iTunes version of Remotely Interested wont acknowledge I've subscribed (thereby auto-downloading the latest episode), it shows 4 eps, not 5 (one ep. is a single second in length) & I see nothing about the Jaguar or John Mathieson.

It also hasnt updated in over a year, since late Nov 2014.

I put the blame squarely on the podcast hosts (or whomever puts their episodes together). There's really no excuse for leaving that in.

Now I don't know anything about Chuck Sommerville's health issues (there are problems like this that are brought on by allergies, acid reflux, and other issues with the throat and sinuses), but when I record, after talking for a while - especially if there's a lot of laughing - the phlegm seems to just build up, and/or the throat dries out - which brings on the throat clearing and coughing. That's when I mute my mixer channel and 'clear it out'. And if I don't manage to catch them all while recording, I can always edit it out later. Because really... no one wants to hear that stuff, and if you plan ahead and spend some time doing editing and production, no one will. To leave it in is just lazy.

I don't know how Lost Treasures Of Gaming records (this is the first episode of theirs I have listened to, and I did enjoy the content, and the show seems to be produced well otherwise), but when I record, everyone is on their own track. This enables background and "body" noises to be masked and/or removed if needed. I've done plenty of interviews with programmers who had similar issues, or frequented "umm town" or "pause city" way too much. What do I do? I clean it up afterwards. Because, if I'm listening to that, that quickly becomes what you focus on, and the content becomes superfluous. And think how the guest feels when the episode comes out, and they listen back. Not likely they will ever talk to YOU again. To leave this kind of thing in is a disservice to the listeners, not to mention embarrassing to the guest.

The only circumstance that would preclude fixing this problem would be that maybe they recorded all three of them on the same track, and at that point, you're screwed. But that would still put the blame on the podcasters for lack of planning.

Maybe Chuck thought they would clean it up? Maybe he thought his mic wasn't picking it up? If he had known, he could have muted it himself, but then as a podcaster, you can't really rely on a guest to do that, nor should you. That's your job as the producer.

Anyway, not trying to get on a soapbox here, just my 2 cents. I've certainly made mistakes along the way, but I always try to make things sound as good as I can.

With regard to the podcast itself... I'm eager to listen to more of their episodes. As I said, the content seems quite good, and I love hearing from the classic era programmers.

I've never really been on these forums, but I signed up to say 'Thank you' to S1500 for posting about For Amusement Only, my podcast. I very much appreciate it.

I am planning to scale back the sheer volume of content once I hit 365. I made a bet with myself, loved ones, etc that I could keep it up to 365 daily episodes, and I'm gonna hit it any day now.

Inspired by Ferg, a couple of months ago, I started talking about the Bally bingos in chronological order, detailing features, play mechanics and artwork. I am almost finished with the entire Bally catalog, then will circle back to standard (non-bingo) flipper and flipperless machines (maintenance and restoration techniques) before delving into a game-by-game of the United bingos.

I also interview folks from the community. I know there is a lot of cross-pollination between the video game and pinball collecting/playing communities, so I'd like to extend an invitation for anyone that would like to come on my show and chat about EM pinball or bingos, childhood pinball memories, etc. - just let me know. :-)

Thank you again S1500. I know my volume put you off earlier, but I hope you have time to pick it up again one day. I'll be there whenever you're ready for more. :-D

I used Podomatic a couple years ago for my political podcast. I didn't mind it so much. I don't know if things have changed since then however.

I did the initial method for uploading a new episode, and it failed. It never got to the final "publish" screen. I then just separately uploaded the .mp3 file & attached it to the episode, and it worked. Podomatic is a really poorly-designed website. It had one job.

Even Libsyn - which I use and like - has choked on a big file when using their normal upload method (and we tend to have BIG files). These days I FTP the mp3, then attach it to the episode. No trouble that way.

I've found that the Wordpress official site works okay, but it's still very, very fussy. Probably best if it's controlled by your own private installation of Wordpress if possible.
