Quickjoy Megaboard Joystick for 2600, etc.

Recommended Posts

As I mentioned in the Atari ST forum, I picked up a machine with a couple of these joysticks. I have never seen these before and decided to keep one and list the other on Chuckwagon or eBay. However, I can't find even the faintest pricing guidelines.

This one is in decent shape and works well. Some yellowing and a bit of LCD degradation. Needs a AA battery for the LCD counting functions, but I have tested these and works great. The one problem is that the trigger button underneath does not work--it's kind of jammed or something. The one on the top works fine, so there is firing capability. It is HUGE, with suction cups on the bottom.

It really should!

Did some more googling (amazing what adding the word joystick will do, duh...) and came up with lots of non-English sites, many Amiga boards (I guess these stick was popular amongst those users), and a brief recollection:

That's the one. The Quickjoy Megaboard. Quite an interesting and attractive design I'll say. I'm still not entirely sure where exactly to place this stick, but I'm sure that I have, at some point, owned it. The things that still bug me are why I have never played with it? If I have I would have definitely remembered it far better. And what happened to it that it didn't stick around long enough for me to remember it? Well, I guess I'll never know the answer to those questions. Still, I'm quite happy that I put in another piece of this childhood puzzle and I never thought I'd actually find this stick anywhere again. From what I read it seemed to be a very good and rare stick in the days, as well as pretty expensive. If anyone has owned one, I'd like to hear what it was like, and maybe describe a few of the functions (like the countdown timer, not sure what that is used for), If I hear some more detail I may remember it better, but still, after 13 years, it's quite a long shot.

Anyway, last call before it's off to one auction site or another. Gonna be a pain to ship it's so big!

It plays great. All of the buttons except the trigger work and it's responsive as heck. It has microswitches; goes click-click when moving around and pressing buttons. As I mentioned earlier, the trigger button is jammed on the underside of the stick. Looks like I can take it that section apart pretty easy, so might take a peek to see what's up after Thanksgiving madness is over!

That's a cool looking joystick, but how does it play?
