Apart from multi-carts, Superchargers, and CuttleCarts...I'd have to say no along the way that you are probably thinking. The 2600 hardware just doesn't have the resources to control such a drive.

The closest thing to what you are thinking about is Kevin Horton's one of a kind Bankzilla but that doesn't require a harddrive.

Instead of connecting a hard drive to a 2600, connect the 2600 to a computer. The computer could supply the information to the 2600 so that the 2600 would never have to deal with interfacing to a hard drive or a file system. Plus, adding and updating games should prove much simpler than if the drive was attached to the 2600. The communication could be done over a serial line (RS-422 or 485 to facilitate long cable lengths) or over ethernet with the help of something like Dallas Semi's TINI.

Wasn't someone looking at putting an Ethernet card in an Atari cart for connection to computers? That's a better idea than a hard drive.

I think HD access times won't work out well... plus the cartridge port doesn't supply enough of the correct signals to read from a HD... an ethernet port is a feat as well... I can think of several reasons why that wouldn't be possible... but engineers can make the impossible possible, or at least Scotty could.. :-)

My flash cart is coming soon :-) All will be relieved :-)
