Missing sounds on my Atari Jr.

I decided to hook up my jr the other day and pop in Phoenix, and I noticed a bunch of the sounds were missing. If you have played the game, which I'm sure you have, you know the Phoenix, Sting Rays, and the UFO all make their own noises.. but the only noises present were the firing and explosion sounds.

 

Any clues what would cause this?

I have a Jr. with no sound whatsoever so interesting as to what it could be.

In Phoenix the left difficulty switch is used to enable/disable the background sounds.

Hopefully - that fixes the problem... but failing that (and it's been a long while since I had to crack open a Jr.), check to see if any of the I.C.'s need to be reseated. Quite common for the sockets and chips to oxidize and not make the best connection. Without even having to fully remove, gently pry one end up and press back down on the chip to cure many symptoms.

Im surprised I never knew that (or remembered) about Phoenix, as it was one of my favorites as a kid.

think about it this way: how often as a kid would you honestly have the difficulty switches at anything other than B? Just stating probability, not saying you were a poor gamer or anything (I only say that because I have had someone claim I was saying such in a similar conversation on another forum way back when...)
