I still think of the Xbox as the Dreamcast 2.

Dreamcast Soul Calibur and House of the Dead II are still two of my all time favorites. If you can pick up a cheap DC grab it.

ahh thats an xillent way of lookin at the xbox - heh now thats gunna be on my mind all the time :D

dont forget about house of the dead 3 comin out for xbox soon. :) and possibly soon after Soul Calibur 2 :)

I can't wait for both games, HOTD3 with a shotgun should be a major blast. :) Soul Calibur 2 will look awesome, the first one is still impressive.

And finally, if you want a system thats got a lot of games(most of them are of low quality) then buy a PS2.

heh, aint that the truth ;)

even tho im not a fan of nintendo and i really dont like the gamecube, i will admit that nintendo has the "other" kinds of games. Its like the majority of their games differ from the average type of game, which is why, im sure, that the GC will have a nice run. but i still wont buy one :D

Someone stated earlier in the post that the bad press given to the Xbox initially was internet driven. Well, I know for a fact that several newspapers had fairly decent articles talking about the bad hardware and customer service Xbox early buyers were receiving. So I wouldn't say that it was a bunch of internet rumors. Now, that is not to say that Microsoft hasn't cured these problems, but they were real problems at one time. I have no clue as to the current status of the system now or Gates' customer service people, but that whole scene sort of stuck with me. I will go on to say that I will probably own all three of the systems sometime in the future. Why? I love video games and some exclusive titles, like many people have stated, are worth the price of admission (buying the console.) :)

Sorry to post this under this thread, but I see a lot of people supporting the DC.  I tried to buy one when they were marked down but never could get my hands on one.  You guys have me tempted to go on Epay and bid on one.  I always wanted to play House of the Dead; it looked very interesting.

They have them at GameStop/Funcoland for $39.99 if you have one in your area. Ebay has alot of good deals right now, you can pick one up for $65-$70 and it'll have quite a few games bundled in with it. If you still can't find one, I can get one for you at our GameStop.

Oh, as for the original topic of this thread:

Most people here either know or can quickly figure out, Microsoft is one of my least favorite companies. The XBox is the only system I don't own, and I don't plan to own unless they come out with some better games.

I recommend the GameCube if you've ever been into Zelda or Mario. There's some great games that have come out already and plenty more to come. Animal Crossing, Eternal Darkness, Pikmin, Super Monkey Ball 1 & 2, Super Mario Sunshine, Star Wars Rogue Leader, and Starfox Adventures are all great games. Then there's Metroid, Zelda, and 007 as well as lots of others scheduled to come out in the next few months.

The XBox has some good games for it, but for the amount of games it has out, the percentage of good games is small in comparison. The Gamecube I feel has a bigger percentage of good games for the # of games that are out for it.

Of course the PS2 has tons of titles, most of which suck, but it's still a good system.

If you are dead-set on getting either a PS2 or an XBox, I would suggest waiting until the end of Novemver as they are rumored to be dropping another $50 or so dollars.

I have decided that when I end up having to get a DVD player that I will probably pick up one of these systems (if not a NUON). Currently, my choice is the PS2 because of a select few games like Metal Solid and the fact that I could play my PS1 library on it (I don't have a PS1, yet I have Tempest X, Robotron and Sheep for it when I get it...)

The XBox lineup has actually been tempting me more and more lately. I really like the Dead or Alive series, so DoA3 is still a big draw for me, although it isn't that big of an upgrade over DoA2. DoA2 for the 'Cast is my favorite Dreamcast fighter. Admittedly, I am at least interested in DoA Volleyball (or whatever) because I have always enjoyed volleyball games dating back to Kings of the Beach for the NES, although it looks like less of a game than a swimsuit / porn flick. We'll have to wait to see my final judgement on that...

As of right now, I'm still leaning towards a NUON, believe it or not. Tempest 3000, Merlin Racing and Ballistic make three games that I'm interested in, and that is (sadly) more than both PS2 or Xbox.

Of course, if it is specifically for playing games, I want a Nintendo Gamecube. Between Super Monkey Ball 1 & 2 and Metroid (again, if it lives up to the hype), it's got me hooked.

If you are just looking for a great system with good graphics, try out a Dreamcast. It is the only "new generation" system that I own, and I can't get enough of it. 239 domestic games, about 30 imports and the best cost make the 'Cast my easy number one choice.

You hit the nail on the head. A system's only as good as its titles. Specs, this much of this number, that much of that number -- all irrelevant. Gimme some good games and you've got a customer.

The PS2 has the MOST, BEST titles available, if you include the original PSX games. Keep in mind, again, that I'm a FPS fan. If you're a sports fan, buy something else. Whoever said that was right. I hate sports video games, though, so if you're looking for a sports machine, I'm not the one to ask.

Cut-scenes and pretty pictures that look like real life have nothing to do with a VIDEO GAME, okay, kiddies? Look who I'm saying this to: Atari fans! You should already know this stuff. Don't become like the other consumer zombies, people. Cut-scenes are the crap between real levels. It's spectacle. It's bells and whistles. It's unimportant filler. End of story.

You want a movie, rent a movie. Play a video game when you're in the mood to play a video game.

I bought a Game Cube and brought it back a week later. Nothing good. A system's ONLY AS GOOD AS ITS SELECTION.

Sorry about all the capital letters today. Too much coffee, I guess.

i totally disagree with that. To me the PS2 has the most boring games. practically 80% or more of the ps2's games bore me. only a few appeal to me. I myself am a huge FPS fan - mainly why i stick to the PC for those games. one things for sure on the ps2, for fps, with THAT controller? ugh spare me please.

and with the ps1 games, most of them to were awful. I know im not the only one who feels this way about sony's titles for both systems, and im not saying the ps2 is horrible, its a good system, but it definitly doesnt have the best games out there, the Dreamcast is better in comparison. :)

Jag,

Well, we obviously have different tastes. No problem there -- I love all of the PSX games I have, personally, and play them over and over (how many modern titles can you say THAT about?). I think Deus Ex on the PS2 is vastly superior to the PC version (finally got a chance to play the latter at a friend's house). But then, I have no problem with the PS2 controller. I think it's well-designed. But if you don't like the controller for a system, nothing will save it in your eyes (i.e. my hatred for the N-64 and Intellivision). :)

Damn right !! And if there are so many great games, how come all I ever hear anyone talking about it GTA 3, GT 3, MGS ? Granted they are great games, but for such a huge library of games, you'd think that you'd actually hear more hype about the hundreds of other games. Of course, most non XBox owners say the only good game on the Xbox is Halo. Ummm, not true. But if that's the case, the percentage of great Xbox games for the amount available is still greater than the amount of great PS2 titles for the amount available :D And as I stated before, I like to play my games, not wait for them to load * cough, cough, PS2, cough*

That was me. Yes there were media articles about some initial problems and nobody would deny that. But, most of it was blown way out of proportion by PS2 fansites and fanboys. I think the number of defective systems was around 1%. As for customer service, don't know about that. It's a pretty well known fact by now that Sony knew that the lasers were going to defect in most early model PS2's and with the intentional "shortage" that they just so happened to have, you couldn't get a replacement. As a matter of fact, the defects they knew about is what finally determined that you only get a 30 day warranty with a PS2. The XB and GC have 90 days.

yeah man i hear ya on that load time for the ps2, just another reason that made me sell it off right away when i got it. On the xbox i barely notice if it loads on games.

The main thing is that the hardware is more advanced and ahead of the PS2, plain and simple. i find the DC to be better than the ps2, or at least similiar.

anywho Halo isnt the only best game on the xbox, you're absolutly right, i hear those comments to....bastards

Like so many people have said before, it depends on what kind of games you like. If you like Nintendo games, go with the Gamecube. The Gamecube has the least amount of 3rd party support though. If you are into Japanese RPG's, the PS2 is the only way to go.

Personally, I bought an Xbox and enjoy the games on the system. I was a happy Dreamcast owner and Sega Saturn fan and the Xbox seemed to be getting a lot of support from Sega. The Xbox is just like someone said, a Dreamcast 2, with Dreamcast sequels such as Project Gotham Racing, Jet Set Radio Future, Unreal Championship, Sega GT 2003, Sega sports, Dead or Alive 3, Crazy Taxi 3, Phantasy Star On-line, The House of the Dead 3 and Shenmue II. The Xbox is also the best deal right now. You get Sega GT 2k2, Jet Set Radio Future and the S-Controller, all for $199(at Target, you even get a free Madcatz controller). The hard drive is also great, you can spend your money on games, not memory cards. The Xbox will also have a strong FPS line-up. You have Halo(Game of the year in the US and UK) now and then later this year and next year you will be getting Ghost Recon, Unreal Championship, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Halo 2 and Doom III. The Xbox also has a strong line-up this Holiday season and early next year; with House of the Dead 3, Blinx, Unreal Championship, Ghost Recon, Toe Jam and Earl III, Shenmue II, MechAssualt, Splinter Cell, Metal Gear Solid Substance, Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Phantasy Star On-Line Ep. I&II, Brute Force, Crimson Skies and Ninja Gaiden.

No doubt all of the companies that make the systems have engaged in less than honorable actions. I can say that my PS1 has never given me problems, and I have had it for years. But then again, my good old 2600 from my youth has never given me problems either. The only thing that this thread has done is confirmed that I will definitely get all three systems sooner or later. I hope that the prices do drop in the near future on them. That would be sweet. 8)

I don't know about the XB but the GCN has a full year warranty.

The only "attraction" I've ever had to the PS1/2 was the compilations of classic games... but I've managed to get most of them on the Japanese Saturn and Dreamcast.

So far the only things sparking any interest (for me) in the Xbox are the Sega titles. PDO just might make me buy it... but not at least until I am done with Metroid and Zelda on the GCN.

Couldn't care less. I'm a GAMER. I know which games I like. Stats don't impress me.

If you only go off "what you hear," then you get your gaming information from elsewhere -- what's "trendy," perhaps -- whereas I play the types of games I love to play. If it were only based on "what I hear," I certainly wouldn't be an Atari fan.

I've hated every GTA game I've ever played. I could list the phenomenal PSX and PS2 titles that I love to play, if you're interested. There simply are very few good games for FPS fans for the other two boxes, compared to the large selection of excellent games for Sony machines.

If stats impressed us, then AtariAge wouldn't exist.

before anyone else lays comment to my statement, let me clarify what i said - this is an issue of xbox and ps2, which is the better system to get. Xbox as HARDWARE has better stats, which means that the hardware is more capable of making better games for the system. Also games that are made for all systems the xbox in the usual case wil have the advantage. Thats all im saying. I today would still take my Jaguar, my 3DO, DC and even my Atari 2600 over the xbox, ps2, and gc. So before anyone else makes me look bad, im glad i clarified what i meant :D

thank you :)
