crunchysuperman #51 Posted December 1, 2009 Gotta go commie! I spent more time on my C64 than I ever have on anything since. Did my first programming on it, and it still has some of the best games ever made.
Lord Helmet #52 Posted December 1, 2009 One system for life...? I'd settle for my hacked PSP Slim with a memory stick full of games and emulators. It can be played as a handheld or on a TV with the video out feature.
kevincal #53 Posted December 1, 2009 A PlayStation 3 that can play all PS1 and PS2 games, plus has every emulator and rom in the world. Is this possible?

nathanallan #55 Posted December 1, 2009 My video response is up, I chose the Genesis/Mega Drive. It stays hooked up and gets played at least once a week regularly and I am always testing to see if this or that game is working. Others that I had to decide against, C64, Atari ST, GBA, 7800, 2600, SNES. Watch some of the video responses, too, they are all on youtube. OldSchoolRetroGamer (aka MaximumRD) it has gotten a HUGE response. A must see is the brother and sister fighting about why their choice is better
82-T/A #56 Posted December 1, 2009 I'd definitely pick the Atari Jaguar. I don't really play games that much, but the Jaguar has many new versions of the old classics, and really... who has time to sit down and play a long RPG anymore? It was great when I was 12 during the summer, but as an adult... just not happening...

You can get the Super Game Boy Adaptor for the Super Nintendo and play ALL of the Game Boy games on the SNES.
DaytonaUSA #58 Posted December 1, 2009 Sega Saturn for me. Between collecting the US long case games and having access to all those cheap imports, it'll always be my system of choice. Pure mid 90's arcade gameplay at it's finest.
82-T/A #59 Posted December 1, 2009 Sega Saturn for me. Between collecting the US long case games and having access to all those cheap imports, it'll always be my system of choice. Pure mid 90's arcade gameplay at it's finest. Yeah, I really like my Saturn too... haven't played it in years... but there are some decent games on there. It's hard for me to get involved in those RPGs anymore. I used to play the AD&D gold box series games on the computer back in the day, and played all the Ultima games p through 8... but whenever I would try to get into an RPG game... just doesn't work. I get board, and the realization that I'm going to have to sit there for days and days just trying to earn experience points so I can safely move into the next area just doesn't have the same charm it did when I was 10 or 11 playing Dragon Warrior... pinball22 #60 Posted December 2, 2009 Deliberately choosing only among things that can't emulate other things, I'm down to two choices, and I don't know how I could ever choose between them: N64 and C64. Apparently I really like the number 64. The N64 is my favorite console ever, and has tons of games that I love and could play forever. (SM64, Banjo-Kazooie, Blast Corps, OoT, Mario Golf, MK64, Paper Mario, Pokemon Snap, Starfox 64, and Tetrisphere, to name just a few.) But then the C64 has at least as many games I could play forever, and probably has significantly more total games worth playing, and some games that have more depth, so it might win out even though it's graphically far behind. (Short list of stuff I'd be playing: Space Taxi, Impossible Mission 1&2, M.U.L.E., Archon, Jumpman, Roadwar 2000, Sword of Fargoal, Beach Head 1&2, Toy Bizarre, Zenji, Summer Games 1&2, Winter Games, Ghostbusters, Sim City (still fun even with just blocks for buildings), The Bard's Tale 1-3, the gold box games, Wasteland, Spooks, Oil's Well, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Hover Bovver, Bruce Lee, the Infocom games... OK, maybe not a short list. And there's still plenty of stuff I didn't mention.)
+thegoldenband #61 Posted December 2, 2009 Assuming we're ruling out emulation platforms like the Dreamcast or a late '90s Macintosh (which would otherwise be my pick), I'd probably pick the SNES. Other than text adventures/IF, there's almost no type of game I'd want to play that it can't do.
nathanallan #62 Posted December 3, 2009 Assuming we're ruling out emulation platforms like the Dreamcast or a late '90s Macintosh (which would otherwise be my pick), I'd probably pick the SNES. Other than text adventures/IF, there's almost no type of game I'd want to play that it can't do. According to the rules laid out, those two are perfectly acceptable. My second runner up would have been an Apple running 7.x and I cleared it with The Man So the DC and 90's Mac are perfectly acceptable choices.
Horst #63 Posted December 3, 2009 As much as I love my Atari Lynx... I'd have to choose the Gameboy Advance. So many games and so portable.

Video #67 Posted December 3, 2009 Well, if I was going to pick an older system, I'd love the 2600, just love where the direction is going with Homebrew for it. If you count BC, maybe a 7800, just to have the later stuff too. Other than that, still a GBA
Herbarius #68 Posted December 14, 2009 (edited) After much thinking I've finally decided: Amiga it is. Strange choice? Not for me. On the Amiga there are all (or most of) the cool games from the "Golden Age of Video Games" (going by my own definition - I think everybody has their own... might start a thread about that later... ) I considered having an old (IBM compatible) PC, but I remembered all those hassles you had to go through to free enough "conventional" memory to finally run your game. I also thought about keeping my current PC, as it could be considered "last generation" already, but I decided not to take Emulation into account - Emulation is cheating Yes I know, you didn't state a rule about that, but I'm not the first one who made that decision. So sure I'd keep my PC, but I wouldn't be allowed to play games on it. I considered the SNES too, but I didn't like the idea of never playing any Strategy games ever again. The C64 was in tie with the Amiga for a while, but I finally decided in favor of the more powerful machine. Let me add, I never owned an Amiga myself! I play Amiga games through Emulator though, and my father once had an Amiga 500. Edited December 14, 2009 by Herbarius
+save2600 #69 Posted December 14, 2009 (edited) I too would have picked Amiga, but considering this would be the only or last system one could have, I'd definitely go with a cartridge based system. SNES and the Colecovision with 2600 module ranks up there too, but the 7800 could be my "one and only" and I would be happy with that Edited December 14, 2009 by save2600
Chris Leach #70 Posted December 14, 2009 I am going to say that If I could only have one system I would have to go with the old Colecovision. Why would I pick that terrible system...Well, I can get an atari port for the console and play all my atari games on the system that I want and I can also enjoy the dozen or so great games coleco released during its lifetime....I really enjoyed centipede on the atari, but found it so much quicker and better looking on the colecovision... So with the coleco I would kinda get two systems out of it.
