Red Faction: Guerrilla (love it and hate it)

Recommended Posts

I've been talking about how I can't wait for more destructible environments for years and I thought Red Faction: Guerrilla might be the game I've been waiting for. It is and it isn't.

Good things about the game

  • The buildings are 'real' inside and out. There are no Grand Theft Auto style giant cardboard boxes that are supposed to be buildings with painted on windows that show a flat, 2D scene of what's supposed to be inside.
    _
  • Destroy a building and see semi-realistic damage instead of a canned animation. If you drive a vehicle into the side of a building, you'll get the kind of damage you'd expect in real life. Unless you're driving a tiny, wimpy car, you're not going to bounce off. You can finally have the type of destruction you wished the Grand Theft Auto games had.
    _
  • After you finish the game, you'll probably have many of the cheats unlocked, so you can play over again with unlimited ammunition, super toughness, run as fast as some cars, get free upgrades, and so on.

Bad things about the game

  • When you finally get the jetpack, you quickly find out that it sucks, even with the upgrade. They give you a lousy short burst, so forget any plans you might have had for some crazy jetpack fun. The Incredible Hulk could jump higher using only one toe. If they are going to rip off the Grand Theft Auto games, how about using the kind of jetpack they had in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas? Now that was a jetpack.
    _
  • You see people walking around and cars are driving by, but the game world still feels kind of dead.
    _
  • There is too much driving. Too bad I can't fly to missions with my jetpack.

I probably won't be happy until I can buy a Grand Theft Auto style game where the buildings and other things are destructible (like in this game), the trees can be climbed/chopped down/burned/shot up/blown up, the ground can be affected through digging/explosions/backhoe-like machines, and the people walking around are more intelligent and act more like real people would in various situations (they wouldn't casually stroll through fire or do other things that make no sense).

Red Faction: Guerrilla is disappointing in a lot of ways, but at least we can finally smash/blow up stuff in a more realistic way. Hopefully other game companies will put that ability into their games too.

Red Faction is a great game IMO. Yeah it could have had more interactivity with the characters in the game, most are mindless drones wlking here, look like your doing something, walk back, etc. The cars are on an endless loop...

But DAMN, this game is just one of those guilty pleasure things. I don't know how much ime I waisted just seeing how much damage I could do with the fewest bombs possible to a building. Yep, that succer is coming down tonight. :P It's really fun to blow stuff up, just to see what would happen in the game.

Anyhow, great game, if you're not sure, i think you can get it for less now than I paid for it. Only real complaint, the original game had destruction on the environment as well. But then agian, tracking all the dmage you did to the land would be considerably more difficlut to pull off. Games aren't quiet there yet, but it'll be cool on the next gen systems when this kind of psudo realistic damage is the norm in most games, rather than the rare exception in just a few.

I picked this title up from Target a few days ago for $19.99 on clearance.

I haven't had a chance to play it yet.

At that price, you won't feel ripped off. There's at least 20 bucks worth of fun to be had.

The game's phisics kinda remind me of crysis. even on my low-power wimpy video card laptop, the phisics are awesome. just pick up about anything and chuck it into the walls of a house, and watch it just break into 100 peices. also, chucking the red barrels on crysis into the air and shooting them with a shotgun so it explodes right outside of an enemy outpost, is awesome. its really funny watching like 5 people come running over yelling"die like a fucking dog" and crap like that, then beating the crap out of them.

yeah you just need to be able to pick up random objects in the game and chuck them at buildings to demolish them would be awesome in red faction.

I played this for an hour or two.

Kind of reminded me of Grand Theft Auto on Mars.

I miss being able to tunnel through the ground using explosives.

This wasn't a bad game at all, I haven't picked it back up for awhile.

Must...beat...Dragon Age before anything.

Well, you can pick up some objects, mostly propain tanks, which you can hit the buildings (or people) with, or throw, though they don't do the damage that you described in crysis. :P
