Suspicious ebay activity?

Recommended Posts

And, didn't he only get the "string of messages" AFTER he relisted it? If he was genuinely interested in selling it to you, he would have done that, I don't know, maybe BEFORE relisting it?! Snake.

Indeed. Just sent him this:

Hi,

Interested to hear you were considering offering me the 65XE plus the price of the repairs (which I could have easily carried out for nothing). It might have been a good idea to do this BEFORE relisting it on ebay, and it was only after the computer re-appeared that you received any messages from my "associates" which supposedly put you off offering it to me. And you still won't send anyone a photograph. No matter how deep the hole, you just keep on digging!

Jon

Some poor bidder has asked about postage to Italy, and Mr Green is bending over backwards to accomodate! This is making me sick. If only our questions would show up!

The Italian postal service is notorious. Most sellers won't even ship there. Maybe justice will be served in a roundabout way.

Check his feedback - looks like he pulled the same stunt on a Sunnyvale VCS auction. I wonder if that console fell from the same loft.

He apparently wants more than 52 pounds for it.

I have seen one seller regularly put stuff on at inflated prices. 520STFMs for £90 BIN but with a Best Offer option - they then go for around £60. If you hang around long enough and are in no hurry then someone will come along. After all, it only costs around £3.50 - £5 to list most items for a year on eBay.

I don't have a problem with people listing their stuff at high prices. That doesn't bother me.

But when they list at a low starting price, then weasel out of a transaction because they don't like how the auction ended, those people should be banned. He's done it at least twice recently, with the VCS and the 65XE.

I absolutely agree. I've said before that I've "lost" money in the past on stuff which I might as well have given away on ebay, but I always honoured the deal, not least because I valued my untarnished reputation as a seller. It's a fact that Internet transactions like these are largely based on trust, and in that respect I feel roundly swindled. I've bought and sold stuff on this very forum, dealing with complete strangers, and I suppose I've gotten used to techie folk being basically honest.

I'm going to stop hassling this guy with emails now, since I have better things to do. In any case, he never replied to any. The only person who got a response was davidskoff, with his faux-uninitiated question.

Since ebay haven't seen fit to follow up on either of my complaints, a desirable outcome for me would be either:

Someone (hopefully someone on this forum) wins the item for an even lower price than I won it for, or...

I win it again at a ludicrously low price. :)

In either case, it should be interesting. There'll be no cancelled transactions this time: just bad feedback if he doesn't ship.

Just buy it again for a stupid high price and then don't pay. :)

Use the new seller rules against him. He can do nothing to you. You can bid it up every time and never pay.

"New old stock, sealed in box!" means absolutely nothing to me on ebay anymore. I've picked up the first two expansion modules for Coleco...both packed fine, but upon opening the wheel, realized the foot pedal was broken. Shattered, somehow...I managed to fix it up, but if I hand't, I paid a good chunk of cash for damaged goods. And since it's 25 years old, there's no refund available.

You take your chances with old electronics on ebay. Unless the seller has tested it and put some type of guarantee of course.

So, did the seller actually sell the item?
