Two 800xls with different issues into one working 800xl

Recommended Posts

Hi there ... in the last couple of lots that I've picked up, the people that I've picked stuff up from have thrown in a non-functioning 800xl. In one case, the video doesn't work (through either the monitor or the RF outputs). In the one that I picked up yesterday, the video works but the sound doesn't (actually, that isn't quite true ... the machine seems to have a mind of its own. Sometimes the sound & video will reliably come through the RF via channel 3 and then, for no reason that I can determine, the next time I turn it on, the audio will stop coming through on channel 3 and, instead, come through on channel 2.) The monitor output is "reliably" sound free. I've reset the chips in both machines and this seems to be the state of affairs. If I want to swap the video chips from the one with the reliable video into the other one, which chips do I have to move?

Thanks

E.

I prefer moving the Lay's KC Masterpiece BBQ chips. They taste the best and ultimately go stale fastest, so moving them generally is the best idea.

In all honestly this should work, theoretically -- I don't see why making a working frankenstein machine would be a problem. I don't know which chips you would move, though.

The chips are probably fine.

If it's intermittently failing, more likely a dodgy component somewhere or just bad conductivity between the chips and sockets.

Just pulling the chips part way out and putting them back will often fix it.

When you say that the video does not work, can you hear sound? If the machine is dead, it can be any number of things since the video/audio needs to be initialized by the processor, which needs functional memory and ROMs. If audio is working, then it may just be the video chips. (U7, U17 and U20)

Be careful. It is hard enough to fix a broken machine with a known, good spare. Two non-functional machines can trade bad parts and really send you down the tubes...

Thanks Bob ... I wasn't thinking in terms of initializing the whole system. I was - for lack of a better way of phrasing it - thinking about dealing with the symptom. Neither of these machines are my main machines - like I said, they are extras that were thrown in - so I might see what I can do with the U7, U17 and U20 chips. I really appreciate the advice - you're right, there's no way to tell what the problem is exactly. It'll be a bit of an experiment.
