DaytonaUSA #1 Posted November 26, 2009 I have X Wing vs Tie Fighter up and running.. well, I guess you could say that. I'm running XP and have installed this a couple years ago. I seem to have completed the training missions, and am trying to play Balance of Power. If I start with the XvT disk, I get a menu that asks what I want to play. I hit Balance of Power and it shoves me on the same main screen after the credits roll ect. From there I can't do anything (IE: play missions) and the Balance of Power disk is never asked to be inserted. If I start with the Balance of Power disk, again the menu pops up and I select Balance of Power. However, when I do this, I get an error message that asks for me to insert the XvT disk... and then I'm back at the same damn main screen with no ability to play missions and the freakin BoP disk still in my hand, never asked to be inserted. Any help here guys? I really want to play this game again, but it's been a long time since I had this on my old computer years and years ago and I can't remember what to do to get this thing to play. +Mitch #2 Posted November 26, 2009 From what I remember you need to run it with the Balance of Power disc, I don't remember it ever prompting me for the original XvT CD. You may also check the Lucas Arts website and see if there are any bug fixes that maybe you need to install. Mitch

When I put that disk in and say I want to play Balance of Power, it always asks me to put the XvT disk in for some reason. Basically, I have no way to play the actually game. The only thing it allows me to do is to input an IP addy to play on a network.. which of course.. doesn't work.
+Mitch #4 Posted November 26, 2009 I just tried it and I started with the Balance of Power CD and it never prompted me for the XvT CD. However, in the readme file it says to start with the XvT CD and it will prompt you when the BoP CD is needed. Hmm... A couple questions, so when you click on solo mode the campaign button is completely missing? Also, did you do full installs of both XvT and BoP? DaytonaUSA #5 Posted November 26, 2009 Ok, I reinstalled BoP, and now it asks for that CD.. so yay. My next question is, how come you run out of the ability of using your lasers? I kinda assumed those should be unlimited.. but it seems on the first mission, you need to go back to the frigate and hit the space bar to re-energize your weapons. What really confuses me about the game is how to just beat the first level. Am I supposed to go to hyperspace and get away or something (if that's even possible). I kill all the ships and then the star destroyer just gets closer and closer. I can't defeat that thing on my own, so what the heck do I do? Thanks for the help so far . You lasers only run out if you don't charge them. Same with your shields. I believe the F9 and F10 keys control the charging rates. Just remember the higher recharge rate the slower your engines go. Your missiles do run out and you can go back and get them reloaded. Are you playing the rebel first mission or the imperial first mission? Greg2600 #7 Posted November 26, 2009 Daytona, if you need the latest patch, I think the one I still have is called XVT_3DFX.exe, though obviously 3Dfx would be useless now! I originally had a 3dfx card. XWvTF used to use the MSN gaming zone for multiplayer, as did Dark Forces-Jedi Knight. I guess that's closed down now? The one thing I wasn't happy about with XWvTF was that a good portion of missions and story/cutscenes were only accessible via multiplayer. I recall getting the game and Balance of Power soon after both were released, and it was next to impossible to find players who would do the missions. Everyone was in a stupid squad or group or army or whatever they called them, and wouldn't help out. I felt the game, aside from multiplayer, which was a lot of fun if people would play, was kind of a waste. X-Wing Alliance was a great improvement, because you didn't need other people in order to experience the whole game.
+Mitch #8 Posted November 26, 2009 Yeah, I don't think I ever passed mission 13 because your CPU wingmen are idiots. You really need another person to help. X-Wing Alliance was pretty awesome probably the best of the series. You just needed to make sure and have all of the patches. Hacking it to use the unplayable ships in the dogfights was an extra bonus, flying the Millennium Falcon or the Super Star Destroyer was pretty crazy. DaytonaUSA #9 Posted November 27, 2009 (edited) I'll have to try charging them. I didn't know that . I guess this really is more of a sim than I thought. I have the sheets with all the controls, but what I learned so far (linking lasers, missles, map, ect) was pretty much learned through trial and error. It's a fun game, but I have to agree, xwing alliance is a really good game. I actually played that first and it inspired me to pop this game in. I know this sounds stupid, but despite the cheesy graphics for today's standards, this still feels realistic.. more realistic than any space shooter I've played in the last couple console generations. While it doesn't look like current games, I actually feel like I'm doing these missions. Rogue Squadron didn't have the same effect for me. It's funny how even with technology getting better, it's still hard for people to make a convincing space flight sim. thrax #10 Posted November 27, 2009 I owned a couple of those series of games for the PC but i haven't tried putting it on a newer OS like XP. Only problem i remember personally was one of my joysticks didn't work with the game. As for the unlimited weapons, IIRC x-wing alliance (maybe others though) had a screen where you can toggle settings like unlimited missiles. THis was good because you can practice fighting in skirmishes that can be useful later in the game. For example you can practice firing hte heavier missiles at star destroyers to see who you can take one out.

That's true, for example comparing a modern 1st person shooter with a 10+ year old games looks like a much larger jump in technological advancement than comparing space simulators. DaytonaUSA #12 Posted November 30, 2009 So does anyone remember the first level? Once all the star ships are killed off and the cargo loaded, it seems I'm supposed to take down the star destroyer... I think. I can take out the radar on the belly and the two sheild generators on the top, but that's about as long as I can live.. even with shields on max. As I supposed to dock or go into hyperspace instead? How do I end this level correctly?
Greg2600 #13 Posted December 2, 2009 (edited) The original X-Wing had some pretty ridiculous cheat settings you could play with. Often times I wasted an afternoon shooting at a star destroyer for 2 hours before it blew up! There are a couple of missions in Alliance and some of the others, which are absurdly difficult, even on the easiest settings. Usually they involve protecting shuttles, God I hate protecting other ships or containers! I remember in the first X-Wing, if you named your pilot certain names, you got all the medals awarded. Alliance was a big step forward in graphics, music, sound, gameplay and story from the previous ones. The Death Star stage in the Falcon is just plain insane! I found Tie Fighter to be pretty simple. I really miss those games, all of which were developed by Lawrence Holland's company Totally Games. You know, I've wanted to get the "X-Wing Collector Series" or "X-Wing Trilogy" off ebay, as each featured the original X-Wing and Tie Fighter but with the updated graphics engine of XWvTF. Unfortunately, they are scarce and the prices are way too high. Oh and read this http://g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/697997/LucasArts-Teasing-X-Wing-Tie-Fighter-Announcement.html Edited December 2, 2009 by Greg2600
