S1500 #1 Posted December 2, 2009 Heh. Beginning of episode of this one guy. You can clearly see a N64, a Genesis, and a SNES on the floor. It's easy to spot as it's not one of the 3 million wine bottles. 20 minutes later, he's holding on to a Star Ocean CD. Lolz.

Cebus Capucinis #3 Posted December 2, 2009 It's on aetv.com, it's the 'Jake' one. The first episode they have up on the playlist, actually. It's the 'Jake/Shirley' episode. I don't really think three systems with a single game makes the guy a 'video game hoarder', though; he's clearly just an immature drama queen who is too lazy to clean his room. S1500 #5 Posted December 2, 2009 He's by no means a video game hoarder. I just thought it was funny he had 3 consoles lying around + he wouldn't let go of a PSX RPG CD(whoa too many acronyms), or the dog hair.
82-T/A #6 Posted December 2, 2009 My wife and I occasionally watch this show. It's so shocking that it encourages us to get rid of stuff that we don't use very often. Like getting rid of that odd bowl in the cabinet that doesn't match the rest of the set, or those clothes you never wear anymore. Those people have some serious, serious problems. Most of these people have so much trash that it literally creates a foot-high of filth. It's usually stuff like empty food containers, and just... filth... There was one episode where this dude was living in an apartment. Honestly, it was really just more of an efficiency... You could not see the floor... he couldn't even fully open the apartment door. The bathroom was so disgusting too... I mean... the guy would wipe himself and I guess somehow the dirty toilet paper would just end up on the floor. I think once his toilet clogged or something because the lady that was helping him clean ended up finding poop on the floor in a few places (which was blurred out). It's just outright scary... Anyway, I think I saw that one, "Jake". I think in that one, the kid's father was an alcoholic and had literally thousands of wine bottles all over teh house. The kid was messy too, but it wasn't really his fault... although you could see the kid had his own problems too... Damn... I think people like watching this stuff, because it helps them feel normal. I always feel violated after watching shows like this... hahah.... But I've got to admit... it seems in the past 10 years since reality TV hit the airwaves, there's always crying on all of these stupid programs. Everyone has something to cry about, and they cry about the stupidest stuff. Sure... I'll shed a tear when I'm watching a cool car commerical or a car doing a massive burn-out on SpeedTV or Spike... it's kind of moving... the sheer raw, awesome power of an Oldsmobile 455 big block... But people just have way too many problems on these TV shows...
Cebus Capucinis #7 Posted December 2, 2009 Watching Hoarders mostly makes me want to go buy plane tickets, fly to some of the people's houses, and punch them in the head repeatedly for sheer stupidity. I think a lot of the time it's just laziness that got out of control, though on about half the shows it's obvious that the people actually DO have problems. Mirage #10 Posted December 2, 2009 The only time he seems almost normal (I mean, like me LOL) is when they're trying to convince him to give up his Sega Genesis, and he says something like "no, this is different, I've had this for a long time, it's special"... I was like "damn straight, I wouldn't give up one of my original consoles if I had one either!" But, really, this kid is mentally ill. Whereas my not wanting to give up any consoles is perfectly normal.
horseboy #11 Posted December 2, 2009 I love that show. It makes me feel good about myself. For those of you that have never seen the show, this kid's house is by far the best of them all. I would lick the floor all the way across that kid's room before I would even step foot in some of the other houses.
STICH666 #12 Posted December 2, 2009 (edited) All I see is a SNES, PS2, N64, Genesis, perhaps a Wii under the purple video switch and a what looks like a Goldstar 3DO under the N64. Ya, I think I have seen all of them. The lady with 2 houses was crazy. They didn't do nearly enough work. She has probably been foreclosed upon by now. The cat lady was really really bad. The worst thing about that show was when they gave the update at the end and the city let her have like 14 of her cats back. Ridiculous. The new season debuted Monday. It was probably the worst one so far. It was so bad that they had the whole episode dedicated to this one lady instead of 2 different people like on the rest of the episodes. They removed 8000 lbs of trash from the house and they didn't even get close to finishing. 2 dead cats were found. The piles of trash were so old they had literally turned into piles of dirt. It was nutso.

shadow460 #19 Posted December 3, 2009 (edited) I've actually cleaned out three apartments that were leased by hoarders. What a mess. The first one was a family member. We filled two large trucks and a 16 foot trailer on the first load only. I think it took three or four trips to clean that mess up. All this crap came out of a one bedroom apartment! Most of the stuff had been removed from inside of the second one, but there were still four foot high mounds of trash in most of the rooms. The back yard was different. It is why she got evicted. The entire back yard was three feet high in trash. There wasn't a single place to step once you opened the sliding door. There was an old dresser out there and a little furniture including a home made lamp and a computer keyboard that I cleaned up and hoarded for myself. (I'm actually typing on that keyboard right now and the lamp is sitting atop my CRT). Almost all of it was packed up in plastic garbage bags, and they were full of water and mildew. I couldn't park my truck right at the door, so I had to haul each bag about 50 feet to the nearest pavement and load it up. I filled my F-150 at least half a dozen times one day, and probably that many the next. The woman had been evicted because she wouldn't throw anything away. The third one was leased by what appeared to be multiple families. It was about 18 inches high in trash throughout and it had flooded several times. To top it all off, when they left, the place was locked up for more than a month while the food rotted in the fridge and cabinets and the dirty dishes left in the sink grew stuff. They did have a nice set of china plates, and since I had only two mis matched ones, I cleaned up the plate set and brought it home. As soon as we opened the door we were blasted with the stench or rotten potatoes. One of the guys threw up right then and there. It took two of us that whole day and most of the next just to remove all the trash. I've cleaned up only one apartment that was worse than these. I don't think the people were hoarders, I think they were just plain filthy. The local news, KFOR channel 4, had been on the property in response to the tenants' call when one of our guys refused to repair the ceiling. The place was just nasty and had so many roaches that in some places you coudn't even see the walls. He got nauseated when he walked in, so after a few minutes he left. This time he was lucky, though. When I was called to repair one of their air units, they wouldn't even let me in the door. The couple moved out with only the clothes on their back a few days after the news crew was there. We started removing trash at 8AM sharp that morning and didn't stop until we got to the bare concrete at noon. Four of us started that morning, and as you can imagine one of the crew threw up within minutes. I was the last out, having volunteered to spray pesticide on the roaches. Once we got the carpet out around lunch time, I went in. By the time I was done, I was almost too sick to eat. I know these people have problems, but they really have to be kept under control. you let someone hoard like that and it doesn't stop at the walls. They pack the stuff in the yard, in their car, in other people's houses if they're allowed to, and I can't even begin to imagine where else. I saw one with a back yard of 1/4 to 1/2 acre and it was packed with makeshift tables, trash bags full of just plain junk, and the storage shed was crammed so tight you couldn't even fit an arm through the door. There were little trails through the back yard barely wide enough to walk down. I just gotta wonder...why on this green Earth do some people have so much crap!? Oh, and the sad thing is that unless you did something to make the mountain of crap smaller, you could go through all that stuff and throw things away, and they'd never even know. They wouldn't miss any of it, either! Edited December 3, 2009 by shadow460
Cebus Capucinis #20 Posted December 3, 2009 That is disgusting, shadow! Blech. I wouldn't even be able to look at all the piles of stuff, I'd be like the crew members and would vomit repeatedly even seeing a mess like that. I theorize that everyone that hoards falls under one of two categories: LAZY or CRAZY Seriously, though, everyone that does this falls into one of those two categories. It's either someone who's too nuts to throw anything away because they've attached emotionally to an OBJECT or it's someone who was simply too lazy to clean in the first place, and then the job got out of control due to the laziness. AtariLeaf #22 Posted December 3, 2009 I tried watching a couple of those videos. It was seriously disgusting and depressing to watch and I just turned it off. There must be a psychological reason for this behavior. Maybe collecting of any sort, like classic video games, is a smaller, more managable version of this affliction but certainly not to the extreme extent seen in these videos. I think I have it a bit, but only with classic games. I have no desire for collecting literal garbage.

82-T/A #24 Posted December 3, 2009 I finally saw the latest episode of Hoarders, you were right, it was REALLY REALLY bad... The piles of trash they shovled out had begun to decompose into dirt. The house had deteriorated so badly, that I honestly think the best thing to have done would have been to bulldoze the entire house. They found a dead dog (or cat?) that was hidden under a 10 year old pile of trash. The arm chair in the family room had begun to decompose because it had been layered in trash for up to 10 years that it literally began to rot. The toilet broke 10 years ago, and the lady continued to use it... the cleaning crew even refused to go in there... I was pale faced the entire time I watched it... After seeing those videos I'm starting to wonder if any of my systems or games have ever been sitting in a pile of rotten food, cockroaches, and cat feces. Yeah, that's why I said these shows are so motivational. I've CERTAINLY never been a trash hoarder. But there was a time when I had 9 cars (and a golf cart). I also had every game system (except Fairchild and Vectrex) from pong to the DreamCast. I didn't collect anything else... except maybe computer stuff too, and maybe stereo stuff... and then I just started to say, enough... I mean, my house was ALWAYS clean... I never had trash around, never had piles of stuff... but I had a lot of boxes in the garage, and the closet in my third bedroom was PACKED with video game stuff. When I started to go back to school, I realized that I just had too much stuff and distractions. I didn't need 10 computers... I didn't need every damn game system in the world, especially since I hadn't even played A game for over a year. So I got rid of every computer I had except one for my wife, one for me, a laptop for the house, and then my first computer (an 8088 in a box, in the office closet). I also went through the house and anything I hadn't used in 6 months, I got rid of. I sold a ton of car parts too. When my wife was pregnant, I went through another phase. I immediately decided I wanted to prioritize my life so I sold 4 cars. A few months ago, I finally decided to start unloading my video games (I've been selling a bunch on here and eBay). I finally realized that I only need to really keep the games that I actually play... truth be told, I haven't played a system in over a year... and it's not likely to happen any time soon either. But I don't play my Coleco Vision, I don't play my Intellivision, I don't play my pong units, or the C380 Pinball Atari... so why do I need it? Sold all those... I'll never play my XEGM, I'll never need 5 NES systems (most of them boxed)... I just don't want STUFF!!! My house is like that of a minimalist. In my family room, I think I have like 4 pieces of furniture (which includes the TV), and that's it...
