Bayonetta

Recommended Posts

I tried the Bayonetta demo for both systems over the past few days. They're subtly different if you have only seen one or the other.

The PS3 version starts off with the raven haired bombshell arriving at a train station and then running through a classical themed environment. Then she faces three extremely large bosses. After that the game provides an example of a one on one duel against another witch as your character runs up walls and along ceilings.

The 360 version starts off differently, showcasing a battle on the face of a falling clock tower. Enemies are all over the place and a giant snake boss flies through the air. It's absolutely stunning. It then continues with an abbreviated version of the train station level mentioned above before ending abruptly.

The nearest I can compare it to is like a Monty Oum Dead Fantasy video in game form. The aforementioned visuals are excellent. The control is excellent. I particularly love the fatalities and torture moves. I feel like I'm in mid-90s Mortal Kombat heaven again. I don't think Sega has made anything near this good since the early 16 bit era. It's an absolutely perfect showcase with action, brilliant supernatural design, and a liberal dose of smexiness.

I found the PS3 version easier to play, although that might just be because I played it first. I found the timing of the dodge moves in the 360 version difficult to pull off. As I mentioned in the PS3 forum, I'm finding a I play games a lot better with the PS3 controller.

So yeah, the demo has made me very excited. Hopefully the full game is just as good. But any game with ladies in .45 caliber fully automatic high heels can't be all bad. :D

Gonna try this one out.

Looks decent enough and I love the look of the game.

Kind of reminded me of Bullet Witch based on the screen shots from what I remember.

I normally loathe these type of games and all the screens I'd seen filled me with disdain.

However, I played the ps3 demo and didn't stop grinning from beginning to end. I LOVE it!

It's wonderfully, absurdly OTT on a way games haven't been since the days of the Saturn. Day one purchase as far as I'm concerned.

Did anyone else pick this game up?

I bought the PS3 version, because the controls in the PS3 demo were far superior to the 360. I have to admit, I have mixed feelings.

The wonderful and precise controls of the demo are not to be found in the actual release. I definitely feel tricked on this point. In the demo I was pulling off perfect dodges and tap-tap-pause-tap combos out the wazoo. In the real game the controls are so iffy that I can't reliably get off anything other than the most button-mashy attack strings. I really feel betrayed.

Then there are loading times. Every time you pick up an item in combat, the game stops and loads. Every time you pause the game, the game stops and loads. Every time there's a cutscene, the game stops and loads. Every time a cutscene ends, the game stops and loads. Every time you try to skip a cutscene, the game stops and loads. Every time you pull up your inventory, the game stops and loads.

Sega, in their infinite wisdom, decided to omit a game install feature to try to alleviate all the loading. There's also no option to customize the controls.

Probably most irritating are the cutscenes. It seems there's a cutscene every step. Skipping them is made as time consuming as possible. Considering skipping them requires two lengthy load procedures, it's often quicker just to let them play.

All of this is certainly ruining my enjoyment of the game. But for some reason I keep on trying to play it. I don't know if it's a sense of masochism, if I'm just trying to get my money's worth out of the game, or what. But I seriously think I enjoyed Onechanbara and the mindless grinding of Dynasty Warriors Gundam more.

I havent heard of those issues on the 360.

Man if they are there I guess I'll pass on it.

That explains why the PS3 version got a lower score than the 360.

I think I mentioned that in another thread someone was complaining about the frame rate and loading in the PS3 version of Dragon Age.

Then I pointed out the Bayonetta review...

The PS3 version has a lot of problems, primary among them being the excessive slowdown and loading. During certain scenes of high action, Bayonetta can slow down dramatically, enough to affect the gameplay experience. I can usually tolerate that sort of issue to an extent, but the loading problems are simply unacceptable.

I dont get it.

I thought that core processor was going to kick the 360 ass afew years ago, but I stuck it out with the 360.

Other than the RROD issue which they fixed I happy I did.

This far from the first time I have seen or heard that a 360 version is better than the PS3.

Just dont understand why. Is it the processor or lazy programmers?

Lazy programmers. The PS3's chip could kick the 360's ass any day, but programmers made the game on the 360 and port it to the PS3... usually quickly and sloppily. Compare Fable 2 vs Uncharted 2. You can see the difference in visual quality (or any two exclusive AAA games). :)

I'm a bit iffy about this game. I've heard a lot of mixed things, and I'm just not sure I need another 3rd person view brawler when I have Darksiders. I'm still searching for that game that totally immerses me. I thought about getting Uncharted 2, but got Darksiders instead, and I think I'm regretting that decision, even if Darksiders is a pretty good game.

If the PS3 was easier to program for I guess it would be nice. Too bad everything is just about ported. Still dont know why the PS3 textures seem to be somewhat blurry compaired to the 360 80% of the time. Its not hard to port a texture?

But COME ON Daytona Dont take the Pile of Crap that Fable 2 (Dont trust LionHead or Peter Molyneux anymore after all the Hype he talked about from Black & White and Fable, and never come thru with it......What the hell were you doing?)is and knew it would be, and compair it to a Sony prized jewel as UC2!icon_rolleyes.gif

Id Rather see on of these games if your going to do that...icon_wink.gif

Mass Effect 2 Left for Dead 2, Gears of War 2 just off the top of my head.

Haha, that's why I said "or any AAA release" :). I don't really know what games are that pretty looking besides the ones I've played for the 360. I wasn't trying to be bias or anything, was trying to be fair :).

As for textures, I don't know why that's an issue. On games that are BUILT for PS3, they're fine. So I'm assuming it's something in the porting process. I know Ghostbusters made their PS3 version's textures better in an update after everyone complained about how bad they looked. So I know it's possible to do, it's just laziness.

I'm getting ready to sell some games, and Bayonetta was among the ones I was going to get rid of. To make sure I didn't want it, I played it one more time, and was surprised to see a patch option come up. I installed the patch and it did two important things. Firstly, it seems to have tightened up the control a bit. It's still not as good as in the demo, but it's better than it was. Now I'm able to pull off combos and dodge. The second, and most important thing, is that it added an Install option to the menu. I installed the game to my HDD and the load times are either gone or at least managable.

In short, the game is playable post patch. The game no longer stops to load for 7 seconds every time you pick up a new item, see a new monster, or try to skip a cutscene. The between level loads are much more reasonable as well, and it no longer takes two minutes to restart from your checkpoint after you get killed.

Sadly, the unskippable company logos at the beginning of the game are still unskippable, and there is still no way to configure the controller. I'd much rather have punch (light attack) on the square button and kick (heavy attack) be on the triangle button, like I'm used to in Dynasty Warriors games. I'd also like to have dodge be on R1 instead of R2. But, thanks to the designers being assholes, I can't configure the controls.

So the game is decent to good now. The problem is, it should have been great. It was shipped completely broken. I regret I got it, because the control issues take it from being what should have been a return to the awesome feeling of confidence which was a trademark of Sega's early 90s games to just a average action game which at times feels just as loose and random as the typical uncontrollable Wii waggle game.

It's sitting on the shelf staring at me, waiting for me to finish Mass Effect 2 for the second time, followed by Tales of Monkey Island and the forthcoming Sam and Max series 3.

Great game, but I never find the time to play it - and it's way too frenetic for 'wind down' gaming. Soon I will tame it. Soon!
