Top 25 Favorites on any, and all, systems

Recommended Posts

I have noticed, while reading the "What have you actually played?" thread in the Atari 2600 forum, that there is often a difference in what people list as the best games, and what they actually play.

So in the spirit of that observation, and in watching too many VH1 list shows, I thought it might be fun to do a top 25 favorite games list, any and all systems included.

Here are my top 25 favorite games, with their console/format, in no particular order. These are games that I simply love to play. And in full disclosure, my favorite system is the Atari 2600.

1. Champ Kong--DOS

2. Xolo--DOS

3. Maelstrom-Mac and Linux

4. Crazy Taxi--Game Cube

5. You Don't Know Jack, Volume 3--Windows 98

No order, subject to change.

NES

1. Super Dodge Ball

2. Duck Tales

3. Gauntlet

4. Tecmo World Wrestling

I've harbored deep hatred for the nes since the 80's (because I blamed it for killing Atari 2600/7800, because it wasn't a Genesis) and have only recently begun reexamining the system, particularly its RPGs. Final Fantasy or Genghis Khan could bump one of those. special note: I've never played any FF games aside from ff:tactics on gba, but I recently managed to get my hands on an almost complete copy of Final Fantasy (all it's missing is the dungeon map) so.... wish me fun! :D

Intellivision

5. AD&D: Treasure of Tarmin

6. Frog Bog

7. Horse Racing

8. Burgertime

I think Tower of Doom is good enough to make my personal fav list but I unfortunately haven't tried it yet.

2600

9. Frankenstein's Monster

10. Pitfall II

Genesis

11. King of the Monsters 2

12. Starflight

TG-16

13. Cosmic Fantasy 2

Cool thread. There is often a big difference between what we consider great games, and what we consider to be our favorites. This is more fun to talk about because it doesn't matter if we are influenced by nostalgia! My list will be a bit DOS-heavy because that was one of the few gaming platforms I had as a kid, being from a somewhat less-fortunate family (meaning that I wasn't able to have most consoles that came out when I was a kid.)

X-Wing (DOS)

Wolfenstein 3D (DOS)

SimCity (DOS)

Epic Pinball (DOS)

Maniac Mansion 2: Day of the Tentacle (DOS)

Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge (DOS)

Star Control 2 (DOS)

Dune 2 (DOS)

Stunts (DOS)

Syndicate (DOS)

The Incredible Machine (DOS)

Super Mario Bros. (NES)

The Legend of Zelda (NES)

Castlevania (NES)

Super Mario Land (Game Boy)

Sonic The Hedgehog (Genesis)

Streets of Rage 2 (Genesis)

Golden Axe (Genesis)

Starflight (Genesis)

Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday (Genesis)

Final Fantasy VII (Playstation)

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (Playstation)

I don't like "top-something" lists.. I don't know.. Don't like pigeonholing myself, I guess. These lists change with my mood (and how well my memory is acting on a specific day).. so many games, I always miss something on any "true favorites" list.. Anyways, here's 25 off the top of my head. No particular order (Only numbered to make sure I have 25), and it's severely incomplete, for sure:

1. Radiant Silvergun (Arcade or Saturn versions)

2. Espgaluda (PS2)

3. Super Castlevania IV (SNES)

4. Sub Terrania (Genesis)

5. Toss-up between Tekken Tag, 4, or 5

6. Strider (Arcade)

7. OutRun 2 (XBOX, only because it has the original arcade game in it as well)

8. Guardian Heroes (Saturn)

9. Toss-up between Ninja Gaiden's 1, 2, or 3 (NES)

10. Toss-up between Castlevania 1, 2, or 3 (NES)

11. ESPRade (Arcade)

12. Primal Rage (Arcade)

13. Killer Instinct 2 (Arcade)

14. Lightening Force (Genesis)

15. Ikaruga (Dreamcast)

16. Quake III Arena/Quake LIVE (PC)

17. Toss-up between the Ultimate DOOM or DOOM II (PC)

18. Quake (PC)

19. BLOOD (PC)

20. Diablo (PC)

21. Toss-up between any of the Unreal Tournament games (PC)

22. Toss-up between some of the Street Fighter games (although I'm the most-partial with Third Strike, Arcade)

23. Toss-up between some of the Guilty Gear series (pretty partial with XX#Reload though, I played it competitively so it's stuck with me)

24. Mortal Kombat II (Arcade)

25. Raiden (Arcade)

May as well have a follow-up thread... "25 _other_ favorites you completely forgot to name."

I could probably come up with another 50 games, easy, just looking at everyone else's favorites.. So many greats that didn't even cross my mind. :D
