Macross Ultimate Frontier

Recommended Posts

So, I'm winding down, watching Classic Game Room HD on YouTube when I see that a game video about Macross Ultimate Frontier has been recommended for me. I figure it's a sequel to Macross Ace Frontier and check it out.

I had kind of wanted Macross Ace Frontier, but something about it just didn't quite tip me over into the realm of purchasing an import game, even on such an import friendly system as the PSP. Some magical element just wasn't quite there.

So, I'm watching this preview. It has the normal original Macross stuff and Macross Frontier stuff. That was expected. There's the typical Macross 7 stuff, which I knew was there because of a Basara song blaring during the trailer. There was also Macross Plus, which is always cool. Surprisingly, there was even some Macross Zero sprinkled in. Just about every Variable Fighter made it's presence known from the SV-51 to the VF-25 full armor variant, and the trailer even showed novel things like Spartans (Robotech name) and Battle 7 being playable.

But that still wasn't enough to tip me over the edge. It had me nearly wetting myself in it's sheer potential coolness, but it still wasn't enough. There was one more card it needed to play, and it did.

Macross II mechs. Valkyrie II Super Armor Packs. Ikarus fighters. Gilgamesh types.

FUCK YEAH!!!!!!

I had to order the game right then. I may have just pissed away $70, but when I saw those Valkyrie II fighters in the trailer, I could not resist.

I would love to know about the gameplay on that, so definitely let us all know!

Question for you, general Macross trivia. What did the people in the show call the Mechas, if they weren't called mechas? I've been rackign my brains since yesterday trying to remember:(

/edit got it! VERITECH!!!

It arrived today.

I figured how to drive my Trainer VF-0 easily enough. The D-Pad steers. Up Analog transforms to Jet. Side Analog transforms to Gerwalk. Down Analog transforms to Battloid. X speed boosts. Square fires the gun pod. Circle locks and fires missiles. Right shoulder selects targets. X and square together seems to activate "Anti-Missile" mode.

I've killed some Migs, Destroids, and a few other variable fighters. It just throws you to the wolves. Which is OK, because I don't think I could stomach a tutorial mode in a language I don't understand.

I'm completely lost by the menu structure, but I'm learning. Mostly, I just have to fumble around until I can get something to work.

I changed my VF-0D's color scheme to match the color scheme my Robotech RPG character's Alpha and Valkyrie II SAP fighters used to have. :)
