Sonic the Hedgehog

Is it possible? Would such a feat be comprehensible? Assuming you could go for 'The Smurfs' type game-play, but I'd take it that'd take the speed out of the game, something that Sonic the Hedgehog originally stood for.

No, I mean a brand new Atari 2600 Sonic the Hedgehog game like the games seen on the Genesis. Obviously it would have slower gameplay and poorer graphics; but would it be possible?

lol I think it is pretty safe to say NO!! If it was done, it would be a big blue mess.

You couldn't come anywhere near the graphics, but the speed would be no problem since the 2600 requires the CPU to draw every frame of the video. One blue player sprite for Sonic, an orange one for Tails, missiles and balls for assorted objects you can bump into, and a buttload of playfield graphics.

The main problem is that scrolling the playfield horizontally isn't easy, and the amount of memory required to store a decent amount of playfield. And playfield-only graphics would be butt-ugly.

It might be interesting if done with vertical scrolling only.

I don't really think it's suited to the system. Some games can be ported from one generation to a different one appropriately, but it seems you'd lose all the essence of Sonic on the 2600. But, if someone wants to try, more power to them. To me, doing something like Boulderdash on the 2600, where at least you have a chance, though it's incredibly difficult, is more interesting. I hope that comes out sometime by the way!

Yeah, it would be interesting. I think your idea of a hack is a good one. Obviously not as customized to the goal, but a whole lot less an investment of time! Go for it if you know how (I don't).

Turn your TV sideways to play.

That's too much work. Just play while lying on your side. As a bonus, you could lie on your other side and play it backwards!

I see. Well I'm sure it'd be interesting none the less. Perhaps a hack of Texas Chainsaw Massacre is in order.

Guys, this is the point in the thread where you're all supposed to realize that he's just been yanking your chain the whole time.
