After posting in the "Which consolde did you receive as an Xmas gift" thread, I got to thinking about a goofy little system (which indeed was a gimmick) I got for Christmas.

Of course you already know by my title, I am talking about the R-Zone.

I remember mine was the one that you wore around your head, so you looked like a total nerd playing it. That one came in two bundles, one included Mortal Combat 3, and one included Batman, unfortunately I got the batman one.

I recently checked on eBay, and found that there are NO R-Zones for sale in the US! Weird!

There were also only a couple games up for sale (and not for cheap either :?) including Primal Rage, Area 51, Daytona USA Racing and a Star Wars: Jedi Adventures or something like that.

It made me wonder, how did Tiger acquire licenses to make cheap LCD knock offs of big arcade hits like Primal Rage, Mortal Combat, Area 51, Star Wars, and Batman?

What are your opinions about the system?

Did you ever own one?

How many games were even made for this thing?

All I know, is I am kind of disappointed that I don't have it anymore, and I cannot remember for the life of me what even happened to it.

While on the topic of cheesy LCD gimmicks, does anyone remember this? If anyone has one and wants to sell it let me know. I got this for Christmas one year and its a bummer I dont have it anymore, because the only two on eBay are $100 :(

I've always been curious about how well these things played. I sort of wanted one when I was a kid (I was too dumb to see through gimmicks back then). Were they just glorified LCD games?

Its just a standard LCD game, the only difference is that instead of being stand alone, they plug into a "console".

Some of the games were fun, but of course LCD is pretty.. limited.

I know I played it a bit, but im not so sure how long I'd play anything like that if I had one now. It would be cool to have in the collection, but the games get pretty repetitive after a few minutes.

I do remember one of the Goosebumps games being pretty addicting though, I always tried to get a higher score.

Why are LCD games worth so much money these day? I have noticed any time I type in the name of an LCD game I owned growing up, they always want way too much.

I remember these interchangeable LCD games. I use to have a Star Wars one just like it. If I remember correctly, there were 3 to 4 different systems (i.e. Star Wars, Goosebumps, etc.)

Ahh crap, i begged my parents to open up one gift on christmas eve... it was the r-zone. what a piece of crap. I had to put scotch tape on the cartridge to get it to work. I ended up returning it. man it was such garbage. :x

:| Way to rub it in my face, lol.

Damn, if only I would have known. $30?

I have it and a few games. I've never opened the R-Zone, I think it looks cooler in its package than it probably is if I played it.

As for number of games, GoodDealGames has a release list:

http://www.gooddealgames.com/Release_Lists/RL_R-Zone.htm

Thanks for the list! If you ever want to get rid of it, I'd actually play it ;) lol

After reading that list, now it all makes sense how they got their licenses for the games.. Sega. NiGHTS? Panzer Dragoon? Sega will license anything to anyone.. just ask AtGames inc.

I'm guessing that Tiger didn't have a lot of competition. By the mid-90s, LCD games were only purchased by clueless grandmas and people who couldn't scrape together $70 for a GameBoy. That's a very, very small market. Acquiring the license for a big property was probably an afterthought... whoever held the rights was probably more eager to cash the check for the PC, SNES, and Genesis game rights. I'm surprised the niche lasted as long as it did.

What are your opinions about the system?

By the time R-Zone was released, I had figured out that all LCD games were basically the same game with different sprites. They never could compete with ANY of the handheld game systems, and R-Zone was asking too much in order to deliver the same thing I'd already seen.

Did you ever own one?

No, but I did have a Light Games Projector, which was basically the same concept without the hot-property licenses. I would love to find more games for that, just out of curiosity.

How many games were even made for this thing?

Elephant Rhinoceros.

I pick one up lat year. It is the head unit, with batman, but it misses the glass piece. So i haven't had a change to play it yet.

These frequantly go pretty cheap, probably the only reason Ebay is not flooded with them is because they do not always sell. My friend picked one up for $9 shipped with 10 or so games last year on Ebay. Just wait, you will get one at a great price.

LOL :D

You know, its a shame that there wasn't a (handheld) LCD console like this that had interchangeable cartridges with all the awesome LCD remakes of games that are actually possible on LCD, like Pac-Man, Asteroids, Space Invaders, Tetris, Super Breakout, etc. Or even and interchangeable Game & Watch GameBoy style one would have ROCKED.

I remember the RZone well. POS gimicky console for sure....but I still wanted one. I'd pick up games as they went on clearance, unfortunately, the headset looked sucky, even to me, and I just couldn't bring my self to buy it. I'd sit there in the store looking at the back of the console at the "handheld" versions, if only they would have gotten one of those....Never did though, and even back when Ebay started, they were to high for my tastes. I think I still have one cart left, itjust looks cool, but most of my collection went for a bit more than I bought it for,so Iguess I came out ahead.

Oh Yeah, the Game Wizard. I have several and love it. I got one goosebumps cart (picked up off the road somewhere believe it or not) The power Ranger games, the Star Wars games, and the Mask games. It was cheap, I seem to remember like $10 new, and each "system"(they were all the same, with different colors and decals) came with three carts. I loved it, though it seemed odd that no standalone carts were available for it(buy a lot of games, and you'd have quiet a few consoles as well, though I guess you'd have a few backups, though in my experience, the system is actually quiet reliable)

As for prices, I do think it's odd how the LCD's seem to rarely ever go down in average price. Most my old LCD collection I've sold for as much, or more than I paid for them (granted, I NEVER paid full retail, some of the single games sold for $30 or more back in the day, and after about 1989, there was simply no excuse)

Keep an eye out though, sometimes one gets listed at .01, and as many people don't bother looking (due to high prices) they often go unbided, or very low.
