andym00 #1 Posted January 1, 2010 The first numbnuts question of the year If I was to pick up an XEGS, just because I think they look so cute with the coloured buttons and the diddy keyboard, can I use it like a regular XE hooked up via SIO2PC ? And also, would a FlashMax cart work on it without any problems ? I'm guessing the FlashMax won't be an issue, but the SIO stuff I'm not sure about at all because I can't get the internet to tell me the answer for sure It's got an SIO port yes, and I'm guessing that means the answer is a yes, but still not 100% sure, so I thought I'd ask before I buy a white elephant.. And are there any other compatibility issues that would make it not worth bothering ? I mean it's just a 65XE underneath the cute colours and keyboard cable ? Or not ? Rybags #2 Posted January 1, 2010 XEGS is essentially an early 65XE, ie normal SIO, no ECI. Apart from the obvious differences though, it has 2 4 bit RAM chips (early XEs use 8 or 16 x 1 bit chips), and the keyboard contains the 2 multiplexor ICs that are normally on the motherboard. Unsure about the pesky caps/resistors that some XEs had to reduce RF noise, although they're supposedly only on NTSC machines anyway. Also, I'm fairly sure that most/all XEGS machines use the earlier Antic which won't necessarily provide the proper Refresh rows for most RAM expansions. Ta very much I shall go grab this puppy as soon as possible then.. I wouldn't be intending to expand the RAM on it and would want to keep it stock, but I just fancy it for developing on and like the idea of the external keyboard for making desktop real-estate more manageable.. Plus.. The cuteness is a slightly overwhelming factor as well, though that might just be the hangover
doctor_x #4 Posted January 1, 2010 I've always loved the XEGS as well and seriously hope one I am watching ends up in my hands - but I cannot deny that the thing just SCREAMS that it needs a "hello kitty" sticker slapped on the main box.. Shawn Jefferson #5 Posted January 1, 2010 Those pastels from the 80s.... ugh. That's one of the models I don't have yet though (that and a 600XL), so I wouldn't turn one down if I stumbled upon it.
