A Closer Look at Going Home Again

Recommended Posts

As I said, it was painful to go back and try to play Mario Kart 64 after Mario Kart Wii came out.

WHAAAAAA!?!?!

My ass! Mario Kart 64 out beats anything "kart" by Nintendo to date!

Mario Kart Wii is fun (unlike the gay-m cube version), and me and my wife do play it a lot, but nothing beat MK64 for me imho.

The levels are all fun, and the controls are perfect in a way that allow a type of "Mario Kart Mastery". Its not overly complicated and the weapons system works good. Both racing and battle mode is lots of fun and laughs with friends.

I have spent countless nights between 17 and 20 playing this game with friends, drinking on some good ol' Captain. Fun times, fun times.

I also like that you can race as many times as you want, where as in MKWii, you are forced into watching the "congratulations" video every 4 races.. wether or not it is a tie..

Haha, sorry that was very off topic. Anywho, great article.

I'd have to say, I love going back and playing the more or less "crude" version of a game. Its like if your used to playing Super Mario Bros 3 on the SNES All Stars version, then go back and play it on the actual NES and remember how crude the graphics actually were.. but there is just something about that "crudeness" that I love, and those sound effects too! Same reasons my favorite port of the original Mario Bros is on the 2600, and why I actually enjoy the 2600 versions of DK and DKjr :D

Trust me, no one was more shocked than I when I tried to play MK64 again after Wii and found it less than satisfying. I LOVED MK64 like there was no tomorrow, but it just doesn't have the magic anymore, MKWii has stolen that magic and will not give it back. Ah, well, the great thing about video games is that there is something for everyone!

Great article, and I am right there with you on the MK Wii thing. I just love this game--I have totally neglected my classic game collection to play Mario Kart. It's actually the first Mario Kart I have ever played--I remember playing on the N64 briefly, but never had one of those. I have a serious MK Wii problem, though. The thing is, I am not even that good at it! BUt I love it anyway...

on the gaming front, another idea for a topic was, comparing the classic/retro games/non games homebrew scene now with professional games/non games development back in the day

Or comparing games development now, with games development back in the day for the classic/retro platforms and given the development budgets that present day games have, would any games released on classic/retro platforms have been improved/better if these games had the sort of budget or half the budget that modern games have

May make an interesting article, but would have a ton of what-ifs attached.
