Potential VBXE enhanced game wish list

Recommended Posts

to separate this discussion from the PP VBXE thread... here are my thoughts of potential games:

- Summer Games (more color, highres sprite animations, intro fixes)

- Dimension X (player sprites using blitter, softscroll of the mountains)

- Dig Dug (multicolor arcade sprites)

- graphic adventure (simply load the c64 artwork as bitmap overlay or better the Amiga Overlay (the pawn etc))

just to name few...

I've given it some thought too. I was seriously looking into Nautilus but came to the conclusion that a basic colourmap workover probably wouldn't add a great deal.

Star Raiders would be great. But a lot of work - to be done properly I reckon an entire recode needed. All the maths would need an extra bit or two of precision for object co-ordinates. It'd look great though with stars that gradually faded in, better enemy sprites and explosions etc. Maybe even incorporate an opposite view and long-range scan into the normal display.

Infocomm games - 80 column "E:" driver, probably add something like a scrollable history function.

Asteroids - some time back I had the idea: wouldn't it be nice to just get the arcade Asteroids or A-Deluxe ROM, and use it as basis to do a proper A8 version. It would be a real chore on default hardware to do the line-draws and have time left over, but VBXE would make it easy, plus we'd get better resolution.

Alternatively, the standard A8 version would probably look 5 times better if done in 640x480 and using outlined rocks instead of ice-cream scoop ones.

Spelunker - why hasn't this game hasn't been reverse-engineered and mods/extra levels made? Simple and elegant game engine, great game. VBXE could make it even better.

80 collum fixes could be done easily with drac030's driver? if they use standard output methods?

Fairly sure Infocomm just uses CIO for all it's stuff - there's already an 80-column software driver out there somewhere that's supposed to work with their games.

Other benefit of VBXE is you can make your mods RAM footprints really small since there's so much RAM the games don't know about.

would'nt it be easier just to release patches for existing games to using the extended capabilities of said upgrade

Merely hacking an existing game to be said upgrade friendly is'nt doing much for the said upgrade and also would'nt add much to the game, especially if the original version wasn't that appealing or interesting in the first place

But doing a new game or an ORIGINAL game that is specifically designed for said upgrade might be more interesting

It's one and the same - release "patch" for existing game or just releasing full version with the mods in place.

Existing games already have multiple versions which might or might not already have modifications, not to mention multiple media formats.

Just easiest to modify a game and give out a guaranteed working version.

Sure new games are better, but you have 10 times or more the dev time. And the whole intention of the thread wasn't oriented towards that.

Hello guys

- Yoomb

- Space Harrier

- Sonic the Hedgehog (OK, doesn't exist yet)

- some multijoy games

And what I've had on my wish list like since forever, although it's not a game, a rollercoaster demo.

greetings

Mathy

Agree about Rampage, it was horrible, but probably needs a rewrite. Racing Destruction Set was a game with some potential, but the version we got on the Atari did something obscene to donkeys. Making some nice looking cars with VBXE might go some ways to make this game actually enjoyable.

It's not a game but how about a vbxe enhanced version of numen demo (the best demo EVER on the A8)

other then that, what about quake 2 or a Croc/Croc II type game
