NES Captain Skyhawk, Colecovision Zaxxon...

Recommended Posts

Played Zaxxon on my friend's Colecovision (best port of it, really) and loved it.

Then I went home and played random NES carts, one being Captain Skyhawk, which is a great game in it's own right. It really seems that CS was influenced heavily by Zaxxon; you have altitude, guns, things to blow up. Zaxxon is more of a 3/4 side scroller (???) and Skyhawk is a vertical scroller, for sure.

But they seem so similar it's eerie and a lot of fun! It might be a stretch to compare these two, but haven't heard them mentioned together, so I thought I'd go for it.

Something that would be great is a CS style game with Zaxxon ships/things on the Sega CD  Wish I knew how to program that well.

Have you played "Viewpoint"? It's very difficult, but if you're looking for another isometric shooter with fancy graphics...

Not too fancy, but the game looks interesting. I might try going after the PS1 port of it. Thanks for the recommendation.

The PS1 port is great with it's updated/CG visuals, but there is some shoddy hit detection and collision that will most-definitely irritate you to no end. Also, the soundtrack and visual themes are much darker, whereas the original game seems more light-hearted with a funky, upbeat soundtrack that lends it a bit of charm. Take your pick depending on your tastes :)

Also, Zaxxon's Motherbase 2000 on the 32X is another isometric one. It shares more in common with Viewpoint than any of the other Zaxxon games, but contrary to the average review or opinion, I really liked that one.

Word of warning: Viewpoint is very difficult, based upon my experience on a Neo Geo emulator version.

But I agree, Viewpoint is Zaxxon-like in many ways, and the visuals are stunning.
