Atari Master #1 Posted October 30, 2002 I need a joystick thats good. I have these little pieces of crap that crap out after a week.
Happy_Dude #2 Posted October 30, 2002 I say Quickshot SVI sticks are the best. But I'v been using the 7800 pad lately. If you have a joystick extension then this is really good. Also anything that uses micro switches "Woo Hoo 100 posts (I only have 82 carts damn it )"
Atari Master #3 Posted October 30, 2002 I only have 41... Is it for the 2600? And are they rare or expencive?
Happy_Dude #4 Posted October 30, 2002 Yeah its for the 2600 its a Quickshot 1 I picked mine up at a thrift for $3. Heres a site, its in german, but it has nice pics http://www.cbmhardware.de/misc/joystick/jo...cks.php3?Lang=D

Atari Master #7 Posted October 30, 2002 I hate the classic one. To hard to screw with.
goatdan #8 Posted October 30, 2002 My personal favorites are also the Quickshot controllers, although if you are rough on your system you can snap the joystick right off the end of it The TAC-2's are awesome ("Totally Accurate Controller with 2 buttons"), but the joysticks are a little stiff for some people's tastes. If you like the style of the original joysticks, but don't like how often they tend to break, Gemstik Joysticks look and feel like a more substantial version of the original, with a more comfortable button to hit. Ze_ro #11 Posted October 31, 2002 I like the Gemini controllers myself. Not the Gemstiks, but the controller with a joystick and paddle together. Some have said that the "serrations" on the stick hurt their hands, but I have no problem with them... plus, you don't have to unhook them to play (most) paddle games. Great! Also, I believe Sears made a similar controller and sold it with the Video Arcade 2... but I've never found one of these, so I may be wrong. Lots of people seem to like the Wico joysticks. They're large, phallic, red & black joysticks that look like arcade sticks. They're very high quality and durable. My only complaint about them is that they're VERY large, so you might want to rest it on a table or something, and the swing-radius of the controller between left and right (or up and down) is fairly large, so you may find them to be less responsive (I can't play Front Line at all with these things). Finally, another one that I use fairly often is the Epyx 500XJ. It's an oddly shaped controller, but it fits the hands well. It also makes audible clicking noises when you push a direction or the fire button. Although some might not like this, I found that it helped me know when I actually hit a direction (I never liked how 'floaty' the directions were on the stock Atari sticks... I like to feel when I get a good connection). Another favorite of mine is the Slik Stick from a company called Suncom. I've used these for many years on my C-64, and they're great little joysticks. However, I should warn you that my brother and I used to buy these things for $6, so they're quality may be a little on the low side. But then again, since my brother stopped using them, I've been using the same pair for about 5 years now, so as long as you're not too rough with them, they'll last. I have one of those Quickshot joysticks, and have used it for years on my C-64 (When the Slik Sticks were out of commision anyway)... it's an okay stick, but I always found it to be somewhat awkward to hold, and the suction cups on the bottom never worked well. Your mileage may vary... I wouldn't bother using eBay for controllers myself... just keep an eye out for good ones in the wild. All the ones mentioned so far are decent, and generally worth the money you'll pay in a thrift store. I'm not sure they're worth $8 + S/H over eBay though... --Zero

SS #16 Posted October 31, 2002 I want one of these. I hear they're easily broken and not the most comfortable sticks to use but I still want one.
+Atarius Maximus #17 Posted October 31, 2002 Another favorite of mine is the Slik Stick from a company called Suncom. That's my favorite joystick. I've had one since the early 80's and used it on my C64 and my 2600, and it's still working fine after 20 years. They're cheap and plentiful, I recently bought an extra one on Ebay for $3. Godzilla #18 Posted October 31, 2002 http://british.nerp.net/80s/oldmags/sansei.jpg found at a local flea market for $3 The only difference between the one I own and the one pictured, is that it does not have a fifth button up by the stick, and the fire button is the same standard arcade style button as all the rest (not different, as in the picture,) Since the pic is b/w I will elaborate: The until is matte black metal, with 2600 color orange pin striping, and fake wood finish particle board blocks on the side. Coordinates VERY nicely with the original 2600s (especially the big sexy,)
CPUWIZ #19 Posted October 31, 2002 AtariMaster: Why do you want a joystick if you don't have a 2600 ? I am confused, you say you have 41 of them. Why ? I have many systems available, what are you willing to pay for one ?
Godzilla #20 Posted November 1, 2002 It's a shame the space age joysticks were not well made. I loved mine. I still have a few from when I ordered them from my atari magazines. at least one still works. I loved the controller so much i bought extras from the atari store so i could still have a working controller when my next one broke. mastertronic made a knock off that is the exact same style of controller, but doesnt handle as well. Vic George 2K3 #21 Posted November 2, 2002 I like the Space Age Joystick, the Suncom TAC-2, and the Amiga Powerstick, but my favorite one is the Suncom Joy-Sensor since it uses a membrane-type control pad in the same manner as like the Intellivison or Nintendo control pad, except that instead of pressing down on the pad, you lightly touch it to get movement on the screen. I used this type of controller even on maze games, which would normally benefit from the types of ball-topped control sticks like the TAC-2 and the Wico sticks. Interestingly, the Joy-Sensor idea was recycled by Triax with their Turbo Touch 360 for the NES, Super NES, and Genesis systems (and since I owned all three systems, these were also good gamepad controllers), but it's too bad there isn't a modern-day counterpart for the latest game consoles.
