+wood_jl #2 Posted January 16, 2010 I think I have read on this forum (somewhere) that a few people run it under "Virtualbox." I have never tried it, and although I run Linux most of the time now (dual-boot setup) I just reboot into Windows to run it, and a few other apps. It's an annoyance that would be nice, if there was an APE for Linux. I wish there were more people who felt this way. There's a thread from last year here: http://www.atariage.com/forums/topic/143308-how-to-run-ape-type-software-under-lunux/page__p__1818294__hl__+ape%20+linux__fromsearch__1entry1818294

charliecron #4 Posted January 16, 2010 I'm not aware of any linux SIO2PC software with R: support. The Atari800 emulator has r: device support, you can telnet with it, even use real serial ports on your linux box. Charlie
HiassofT #5 Posted January 16, 2010 I need a program to run my atari on the ape atarimax cable but on linux.. Which cable do you have, the USB or the serial one? The USB cable only works with APE (Steve promised to release docs, but never did), so the only option for this cable is to run APE in a virtual machine (VirtualBox, VMware, maybe kvm/qemu, ...). If you've got the serial cable, there are quite some alternatives: If you have a real (16550 or 16C950) serial port, I'd recommend my AtariSIO software. With a 16C950 card you can use transfer speeds up to 126kbit (and this runs even faster than the Atarimax USB cable). I'm using such a card in my desktop PC, if you want to buy such a card (either for a desktop or laptop) just be sure it's fully 16C950 compatible and supports speeds up to 921600 bit/sec. If you prefer GUI software, have a look at AspeQt (it also supports using the AtariSIO kernel driver as a backend). If you are using a USB-RS232 dongle, first make sure you have one with an FTDI chip, don't even think about trying dongles using the Prolific PL2303 chip (they are crap). AtariSIO doesn't support USB-RS232 adapters, so you are limited to other programs like AspeQt or sio2linux. and does it have the R: handler like the windows version? Currently none of the Linux programs support R: device emulation. It's on my TODO list, but I can't tell when I'll start implementing it. so long, Hias
Kernal #6 Posted January 16, 2010 well hais when u do please include a SSH implementation or include telnet so we can telnet to somewhere with SSH if the auth codes are too hard to do. =)
Kernal #7 Posted January 16, 2010 Also i have the RS232 version of the sio2pc chord.
Kernal #8 Posted January 16, 2010 also steve kinda did release the docs.. u just have to do some searching on his website.. and actually re-type the address into the address bar.. so there is documentation its just hard as hell to find.. i think im gonna write up a good manual for him.. for the RS232 at least. HiassofT #9 Posted January 16, 2010 well hais when u do please include a SSH implementation or include telnet so we can telnet to somewhere with SSH if the auth codes are too hard to do. =) My plan was to use external programs for that (like in the P: emulation), so R: can be connected to /bin/sh, telnet, nc, ssh, ... so long, Hias
