Space Mission cart in old ad

Recommended Posts

...in Popular Mechanics, December 1977, along with a mock-up Air-Sea Battle screen. Space Mission was the early name for Star Ship.

Sorry for the poor quality - it's from a microfilm machine (does anybody have this issue? I'd like to get a better scan of it).

Wow, an Air-Sea Battle build in an Atari 2600. :D

I see no cartridge inside the Atari, so it must build in. ;) :D

That must have been a standard publicity shot from Atari because it was also used in a 1979 book on the design of electronic/video games (from an engineering point of view). An appendix profiles the Atari 2600, Coleco Telstar Arcade, the Fairchild Channel F, and the RCA Studio II.

Ah, here it is:

Buchsbaum, Walter H. Electronic games : design, programming, and troubleshooting (New York : McGraw-Hill, 1979).

ISBN: 0070087210

I no longer have this book (it was a library book I found ca. 1995); but I did send a photocopy of the photo to Craig Pell (VGR) for his website and master list of 2600 games.

Thanks for the info!  What's Craig Pell's website?

I don't think it is online anymore. I no longer have it bookmarked at any rate.

I'll try and track down a copy at a local library, or buy one, and post a better scan.

I can provide you with a list of Canadian libraries that are willing to loan it via your local library. Let me know.

Very cool find indeed.

I've never found an Atari ad outside of comic books (with the exception of an ad for CBS games in an old car mag). I've found Intellivision, Odyssey, and TI/99, but no Atari.

There are ads for the 2600 and Apple IIe computer systems in a couple 1980 issues of Playboy... I had a few copies as a kid ;-) and remember the Apple IIe ad... it had a bunch of beach goers throwing it in the air and smiling at it... wierd.

I don't remember the month, but I do remember the cover was ranting about Naughty Nurses.... :-) If someone can track it down and scan the ad you will see what I mean... it is strange :-)
