nonner242 #2 Posted January 25, 2010 Topic says it all. I have a 360 with a DVD drive that went belly up. It is out of warranty. Thanks, -Lee Mine died 2 years ago!......BUT! If I repeatedly punch, tap, smack, hit it between 1-5min (on the left corner, slightly above the dvd tray.) it always works...I kinda have to try a different pattern depending on the sound the drive makes. I started having this problem amonth after I got it back from M$, I saw a vid on Youtube of a guy hitting it, so I tried it...and will continue till it dies. moycon #4 Posted January 25, 2010 I am afraid that mine is beyond that stage. Thanks, -Lee Looks like you can get them off ebay pretty cheap. eBay Auction -- Item Number: 260543008711 This ones from Hong Kong, I've ordered HDDs for the 360 from Hong Kong twice before and was surprised at how little they changed for shipping and how quickly I got the merchandise. Hyper_Eye #5 Posted January 25, 2010 Be aware that replacing the DVD drive in the 360 is not as simple as just dropping in the replacement. It requires some firmware modification. http://www.360-hq.com/xbox-tutorials-61.html If you are uncomfortable doing this you may want to have your machine repaired by MS. If you are thinking that it is annoying that MS has done this remember that it is through the DVD drive firmware that the first system vulnerability was found. If you want to buy from a reputable store with a product warranty you might consider the llamma store. I have never bought replacement parts from them but I have bought case mods and other modifications from them and the service is good: http://secure.llamma.com/catalog/index.php/cPath/73_86

Bummer. -Lee

You aren't actually upgrading the firmware. You are just spoofing your original drive.
diggs130 #8 Posted January 29, 2010 I removed the board from my bad drive and put it into a good drive from a donor 360 and it now works an reads just fine.
Jess Ragan #9 Posted January 29, 2010 I just went with one of the drives on eBay. 250GBs for $100, which isn't a fantastic deal for a hard drive, but it IS pretty cheap for an Xbox 360 hard drive. The transfer didn't go as smoothly as I'd hoped- I lost my Rock Band 2 save, which was kind of a shame- but I'm still pretty happy with it. I was getting sick of rationing hard drive space on my 20GB and deleting software and music I didn't really want to lose. Now that I have 250GBs to spare, I can save practically anything, and even store a few disc games to the hard drive, without worrying about running out of space. The subject of this thread is replacing a dead DVD drive. The HDD is an interesting part of the 360 but not a relevant item to this thread.
GrizzLee #11 Posted January 30, 2010 I removed the board from my bad drive and put it into a good drive from a donor 360 and it now works an reads just fine. I saw a video on someone doing that. Interesting. Maybe I can find a donor DVD drive off a dead 360. Here is what happened. My DVD drive was sticking. I opened up the 360 and took the drive out and re-seated it (no harm, or so I thought.... or so I thought). Now the drive won't close with a disc in it. It looksliek teh upper disc retainier is hanging up on the DVD. I took it to a couple of XBOX repair folks and they both said I needed to replace the drive. Thanks for all the advice. -Lee
