Stella Suggestion: Timed screenshots

I just thought of a useful feature for taking screenshots in Stella. Screenshots that are taken every 'x' seconds automatically, without intervention from the user. This would make it easier to take shots during a game without having to divert your attention from the game and fumble around with the keyboard for the correct key to hit. Yeah, it might generate tons of shots (depending on how often you take them), but they are easy enough to sort through and small in terms of file size.

I'd like to be able to save screenshots from the debugger, since you can frame-step through the game there. (Or being able to pause and frame-step from the main window would work, too. MAME allows this.)

I agree. When I developed software for my own use in organizing and launching emulator-based games, I ended up adding on a function for taking screenshots so that it would work no matter which emulator was running. It has a user-selectable delay of X seconds before the shot, and then an optional random (user selectable) seconds of additional delay. I like the random element because some games are exactly the same at any given point into the game. Or you could just take lots of shots (one per second or something), but I didn't like going through all those shots when I was setting up scores of games in the organizer.

 

If Stella had some sort of ability like that built in, a lot of people would probably find it useful.

It's probably a good idea to add this to the Tracker as a new suggestion. Although, every time I look at the tracker, I get discouraged by how long it's getting I really need to find some time to get back to Stella development very soon (hopefully).
