Game Sound Effects in Songs?

Recommended Posts

I don't imagine there are too many other Cephalic Carnage fans about these parts but I had picked up the re-release of Conforming to Abnormality the other day and while listening through it noticed that at the 1:39 mark of the track Exhumed Remains are the sampled sound effects of when the swirly thing from Yars' Revenge shoots out and kills the bee. That is one of my favorite games.

Are there other artists/songs (other than those Pac-Man Fever fellows) out there that incorporate old school videogame sound effects?

There are a number of established bands that use game sound effects, game tune patterns, and even old computers (like C64s) in their music, particularly in the electronica and EBM worlds. Some notable ones are Apoptygma Berzerk, welle:erdball, and Diary Of Dreams. Then there are albums with a gaming theme, such as I Am Humanoid by Tony Fox NYC (a recommended buy). Others feature a lot of game-based content, one example being Panzer Division's excellent disc "I Am Sinistar", which contains tracks using samples from Sinistar, Impossible Mission, Gauntlet, and others. Finally, there are individual tracks from "regular" bands, such as "Space Invader" by The Pretenders, which incorporate game sounds.

Check these out if you like, and let me know if you'd like more references.

I know there is a song with the mattel handheld football game sounds in it, but the name eluded me.

You are thinking of The Logical Song by Supertramp. I have always loved that part of the song.

THAT IS IT!!! It was on the tip of my tongue (or should I say ears?) Thanks, I just launched it now from my iTunes!

How appropriate, it starts off with "When I was young..." 1979, 9th - 10th grade. MAN I AM GETTING OLD.

I think there was some Limp Bizkit (?) song that used sound effects from Defender.. the sound of a humanoid being captured I think.

Joe Walsh's Space Age Whiz Kids has sounds from Donkey Kong, among others.

The arcade sounds are at about 2:00 into the video. It's hard to hear them in that video posted on Spike, though. It's clearer on the record.

I'm not sure about songs but I swear I heard a 2600-generated sound effect during the harvester scene in Terminator Salvation.
