Mendon #1 Posted February 4, 2010 Sorry if this is a stupid question but...... if you install a game to the hard drive, do you have to select "Play from Hard Drive" on the options menu or is the game automatically run from the hard drive when you click on Play Game? cimerians #2 Posted February 4, 2010 LOL....I always wondered that. I think it auto-plays from the hard drive but again, I'm not sure.
The Codex #3 Posted February 4, 2010 Virtually positive (fancy way of saying "I think") that it runs from hard drive from then on. Games certainly load at hard drive speed afterwards, and I can hear the hard drive whirring. Some games have such long load waits though I can see where you'd think it was still running from CD. Mendon I just installed Mass Effect 2 to the HDD and booted it up from both. The sounds it makes (There is a brief sounds of the disk drive I'm assuming to verify you own the game and then nothing) when booting up is the same regardless where you start the game at so I'm guessing it doesn't matter where you start it from them on, it's going to read it off the HDD. Remember...there are no stupid questions. BTW, This is the first 360 game I've installed.
Seob #5 Posted February 4, 2010 I have to try. I always scrolled down to play from hdd. If this works, that would be great.
liveinabin #6 Posted February 5, 2010 Heh. I was wondering this too. I'll try it with Mass Effect 1 tonight.
Atarifever #7 Posted February 5, 2010 Can you do this with every game? I have PacMan CE on disc (compilation that came with the Arcade 360 for awhile), and would much rather a game like that just be on with the other arcade games I have.

No you can't do this with every game. Namco Virtual Arcade won't let you install it to the hard drive. If you try it just tells you that feature doesn't work so it wouldn't hurt to try with other games like your compilation disc.
Seob #9 Posted February 5, 2010 Well tried last night with gtaiv episodes disc. And it works. Save about 5 seconds in booting time, since you don't have to scroll trough the dash.
liveinabin #10 Posted February 5, 2010 Huh, yeah. Seems to boot off hard drive by default if it sees an install.

If you try it just tells you that feature doesn't work so it wouldn't hurt to try with other games like your compilation disc. That's odd that they changed that. It wasn't that way when the game was released. I specifically tried installing it in the hope that maybe the XBLA games would remain in my XBLA menu even after the disc was removed due to being installed (Was hoping that idea had been overlooked and might possibly work on a XBLA compilation disc). My hope for a loophole that wouldn't require the disc to remain in the drive didn't work, but it remains installed on my 360 to this day. It was installed back when the 360 wasn't able to eliminate the padding in the disc so my installation is several gigs in size and isn't optimized for space. I recently reinstalled Raiden Fighters Aces and my install went from 3.4 gigs to just under 500mb's. So I presume they must've made a change to prevent it for some reason with XBLA compilations, possibly with the summer dashboard update that optimized game installations to get rid of the unecessary padding. The games on Namco Museum are so small and load so quickly that installing that game isn't very useful anyways. Video #12 Posted February 7, 2010 (edited) If you save a game to the HDD, it will automatically play from the HDD, however, it will ping the DVD drive to make sure the game is in there first I finely installed a couple of games on the HDD, cause I got tired of hearing the damn thing rattling like it was going to explode on me It was more convenient than shoving a piece of paper in the drive tray to shut it up. Interesting....beyond it's initial pinging of the DVD drive, I don't think it even spins the disc, if the system was opened up, you could probably remove it and start up in another console (for multi-playered games like Halo or whatever) Edited February 7, 2010 by Video

Hey, let me know if it works, I only have one system and plan on leaving it alone until it fails, but it would be interesting to know
