Re-buying the game via PSN (If it's available on there) is the only way you can do that without modding your system.

Yeah just buy it on PSN if it's available..otherwise go buy a pre modded PSP off craigslist and rip your whole catalogue and then some..

exactly. Sucks but that's the way it is...and also why a modded PSP is the way to go.

Yes, and factor in the fact that Sony rapes you with their PSN download prices (Games typically being more expensive online than what you can buy in a store), one is definitely best off modding.

Aye, custom firmware all the way.

I bought some factory sealed PSP games from Amazon last month for less than $10/each shipped that are selling on PSN for $19.99 as downloads. WTF?

Last night I used an unmodded PSP to look around PSN, but here's what I found.

  • a PSP-formatted movie that takes 2 hours to download costs $9.99
(the DVD is cheaper on Amazon or at local retailers)

  • the download version of a UMD game costs the same as list price for the physical version
(the factory sealed UMD is cheaper at Amazon or local retailers)

  • "PSP Minis" start at $2.99, but most are more
(Minis are Sony's reaction to the iPhone App success, yet Sony failed to understand that several times more people will buy at $0.99 than at $2.99. $0.99 is affordable, expendable, and justifiable)

It's a real shame. The PSP version of the PSN store is pretty good, especially for the interface. They've got a lot of decent media (TV, movies, comics) up there, too. If they got their heads out of their arses and made the prices reasonable, I would consider buying stuff from them. But when I spend hours downloading, then store and backup the files myself, I expect to pay no more than half of what I do for physical media.

Sadly, it's yet another example in a long list of Sony's PSP cluster-Fs and squandered opportunities.

What's the model number of the PSP? If it's a 1000 or 2000 series, there is still a way without having to run custom firmware. You will have to run it for a few minutes while an older firmware is flashed to the PSP.

Your answer lies in ChickHEN and GEN firmware. When the exploit is run on certain firmware (I forget which), custom firmware is "installed" to the PSP's RAM. The firmware on the flash memory is not changed at all. To remove the cutsom firmware, just turn off the PSP and hold the switch for ten to fifteen seconds. The next time you boot it will run with the firmware from the flash. Run the exploit again to run custom firmware. To run games like Gran Turismo you will need to patch the custom firmware for them. They will run on 5.5x custom firmware with those patches.

Honestly, though, flashing custom firmware onto the PSP is the way to go. It's a near transparent mod, and it's very easy to do. I had heck trying to mod the PS2, and modding other systems ranges from medium difficulty to beyond nightmarish. On that list, modding the PSP 1000 or 2000 would be easier than the "beginner" difficulty. You could have a 2000 CPU swapped into a 3000 series PSP if you've got the 3000, but that's closer to "nightmare" than it is to "easy" and it would disable the mike. You can load up Time Machine and be able to boot into your choice of firmwares, but this will limit you somewhat to your own memory sticks and batteries (no borrowing from a friend).

If you're wanting portable movies, buy the DVD, rip it, and convert the file with something like 3GP converter. An un modded PSP will happily play anything you throw at it in this case. That is, unless you just want to have the UMD version for some odd reason (like me). UMD movies can also be ripped digitally with a modded PSP, or they can be recorded through the analog hole with an un modded system. I don't know if they have Macrovision on them or not. If so, it'll be on later releases after the PSP-2000 came out.

Almost forgot: You get more MB for your buck with the 8GB cards. Watch the speed, though. SanDisk cards are pretty consistent, but if you go for a different brand look the model number up first to make sure you're not getting something that transfers at only 5 MB per second.

PSP games are not small. Some are, but most seem to be between 800MB and 1.7 GB. Two games could conceivably fit on your card and that's it. Crisis Core and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories are two of my games that are 1.7GB. Smart Bomb is my smallest at 117MB.

IIRC, The ChickHEN exploit only works on OFW 5.03 or lower.

True, but new developments are always happening. Also, if he's got a 1000 or 2000 series PSP, he can change the firmware to 5.03 official, then run ChickHEN and run memory resident custom firmware without changing anything on the flash after he gets to 5.03. Then if he wants to go back to 5.03 for normal operation, all he has to do is remove the battery for a few minutes.

If he's got a 3000 with the latest firmware, though, he will have to wait for ChickHEN to be updated or a new exploit to be found.

Sigh... I really need to learn what I need to do to upgrade my PSP. LOL

Every three months or so, I look back into the firmware world of the PSP to see that it generally has changed (and I mean by a lot).

Thime for me to search for another online step-by-step tuturial

I haven't updated my 1000 series PSP in close to a year, I think. I updated the Slim about three months ago. I don't know yet how to do the RAM installation thing--I always install to the internal flash memory. I've never found it to be difficult, really. It's one of the easiest units to modify in this manner unless you count using a multicart with an older console.
