paddle control override

Recommended Posts

Out of the admitted minority 2600 users that prefer gamepads, a lot of us prefer sega genesis pads because they don't require any modification to work with the 2600.

Harmony autodetects genesis pads as paddles.

Would it be possible to have harmony return to joystick mode if a stick up/down is detected? This would have the added benefit of allowing a user to change the controls from paddle to stick without a power cycle.

This problem has been reported before and I was going to try to replicate it myself but was unable to find my Genesis controllers, and frankly I forgot about it. But your suggestion is a good one, and I think it can be done.

Sorry to hear that.

Maybe, but I am not sure, since we are currently out of space in the menu (3 bytes free). I will have a look if I can find a few bytes.

It may work if the detection could be changed to detect paddle 1 instead of paddle 0.

Also, from the controller pinout, one might be able to get a Genesis controller detected as a joystick if button C is held down during powerup.

EDIT: found a Genesis controller (an aftermarket one, not an original) and holding button C does not work. Also hacked the BIOS to try paddle 1 and it still didn't work.

We're back to up/down.

Thanks to all for your efforts in fixing this. I use Genesis gamepads as my CX-40s are flaky and/or stuff, plus one of my gamepads has an autofire control which is handy. I'd rather not subject my controller connector to the strain of pulling it out every time I load a new game, so any solution would be very much appreciated!

If any or all of the Harmony team wants a (or another) genesis compatible pad to test with, please PM me with your shipping information. I'll gladly have one of these sent to you.

Thanks, but I don't think its a problem of not having the hardware, but of having no space for the extra check.

Any chance we can get a separate version with the paddle check disabled? That wouldn't cost any bytes.

I can "suffer" using the console switches to select a game the 1 or 2 times a year I decide to play a paddle game, but I can't do the same with the sega pad, as INPT0 pins the selection to the top.

That would work. But I am not sure if we want to release more than the current 3 different BIOS. Better I find some bytes.

The problem with reset is that select and reset are alternative menu navigation schemes.

Since the team is busy, I took it upon myself to try and fix the problem. Holding down the fire button on power up (button B on the Genesis controller) will disable the paddle check. I think it will work normally otherwise (i.e. detect paddles, driving controller, or regular joystick) but if it doesn't, someone let me know. If this works, we'll incorporate it into the next release.

Is there any chance of getting this in a PAL version? I would really like to try it out as I get tired of disconnecting my Sega Mega drive controller every time I boot up with the harmony cart.
