Exclusive Falcon games....

Recommended Posts

There seems a lot of interest in the Falcon, and to be fair I would love to own one anyway because it is the pinnacle of Atari home computing as far as I am concerned.

But I am having trouble finding any truly awesome Falcon specific games. There are some stunning demos from The Black Lotus but the games I have seen are a bit iffy.

So what are the best Falcon games?

Actually there is only 1 falcon 030 demo by TBL and a few ports of their amiga demos for a falcon with a 060 processor. So I guess you missed a few things.

Didn't say just for an 030 and the Falcon has great sound compared to the unchanged sound of the Amiga AGA setup, was just talking in general. And TBL's demos are still better than a 50mhz DOS demo usually.

So, my personal Top 10 Falcon games are:

1. Crown of Creation 3D - Full benefit of Falcon´s hardware (DSP for on the fly 3D calculations!), surround sound and nice 3D space battles, lots of missions and many background stories! - Personally I prefer this game over Battlesphere (not graphics, or AI wise) because of it´s great story mode! I haven´t finished it, yet as it´s very tough but never unfair! I will within the next 20 years I hope ;) And it seems noone else did finish it...

You can only buy it new or hope for ebay... Try here: http://www.1632systems.co.uk/www/html/Product/crown.htm

2. Robinson´s Requiem - Great adventure RPG in 3D... if possible, try to get CD version (better graphics and more videos)

3. Llamazap - Excellent Defender clone from Jeff Minter. MUCH better than Defender 2000 on Jag (better control of ships)... Different ships, loads of power ups, huge bosses and bonus levels!

4. Obsession / Pinball Dreams - both excellent pinballs, I cannot decide which to like best... Obsession looks a little more modern although it runs on STE, too.

5. Running - Really tough 1st person shooter for the Falcon... Many and long missions... Excellent!

6. Steel Talons - bashed by many, loved by me... If you have an accelerated falcon it´s even better! 2 player on 2 computers possible via midi!!! Great!

7. Moon Games / Moon Speeder: Great racing games

8. Blum - Excellent and colorful jump n run! Insanely difficult, but great boss fights and nice background story a la Super Mario.

9. Radical Race - Top down view racing at it´s best! You can shoot your opponents if you like or play just "normal" races... anyway it´s one of the most fun games of this kind!

10. AAzohm Crypt / Ultimate Arena - Nice Mortal combat like fighters with digitized player...

And I would have much more on my list ;)

Have fun and get a Falcon, it´s worth it ;)

An accelerated falcon is pretty much a requirement.

Well no ;) Running works pretty fluid on a stock falcon (sometimes switches down detail mode). But sure it benefits from an accelerator (cheap 25 MHz one would be enough).

I dunno, it drags pretty bad on my stock Falcon.

Iv'e seen something similar to this on my CD32 on FPS games in the past, same settings same machine specs but slightly more lag in identical areas between two machines. Even evident on youtube as 2/3 captures of gameplay vid show no lag but one does and all 3 are recorded on real hardware (which shows given the rubbish video blurring due to compressing a composite video capture to FLV/MP4 as usual)

@Poobah: I think what Oky said is true for falcons, too... in fact falcon timing is very critical, so I think you could have a "bad" machine... maybe you haven´t fpu? I mean mine has, but I don´t know whether Running uses it or not... and of course ST-RAM is also a bottlneck... the faster the better. Falcon Wings card would be much slower than original Atari for example.

@Oky2000: so where do you live? I know in the USA falcons are very expensive... in Germany they are a little more common and a little cheaper...

Best regards,

Chris

I actually have more than one falcon

Running is pretty slow on stock hardware.

The ram speed isn't really relevant- the bus only runs so fast.

No unfortunately space junk was never released. Something to do with a huge number of floppies needed for a complete game.
