nonner242 #2 Posted February 21, 2010 YES! One of my favorite systems EVER. It had some awesome games of its own: Alien vs Predator Missle Command 3D Iron Soldier 1 & 2 Breakout 2000 Defender 2000 Skyhammer Phase Zero Battle Sphere Zero 5 Mutant Penguins Tempest 2K (Been on other systems but I like the music better than PSX or Saturn and it was on Jag 1st) Battlemorph I-War These are just some of my favorites...and dont forget all the homebrews too! ovalbugmann #4 Posted February 21, 2010 (edited) Of course remember the people in the Atariage Jaguar forum(myself included) are biased because we love the Jaguar here! Well, I think "collecting for Jag" is for people who already have a Jaguar and know that they like it either for the games, interesting hardware, senimental feelings towards it, memories of good Jag times back in the day and also people that: hate the Jaguar but are Atari collection freaks and have to have at least one of every console & computer Atari ever made just so they can say they have every Atari console even if they will not be playing the Jag at all and it sits in the closet or shelf collecting dust forever- these are Atari completists collectors, for the sake of OCD completing. But for you I think you should first see if you like the Jaguar system or can appreciate it's uniqueness, or like something about it in order to keep it around your place and not sell or abandon it, before you consider "collecting" for it as it's expensive to do(unless your rich!) And this would be the logical proceedure -going from buying one and getting acquanited with the Jaguar, to liking it and then to loving it and finally collecting everything for it as I do. So, I would go to ebay buy a Jaguar as cheap as you can(no box), get a few controllers, get some of the good games for it and wait on the Jaguar CD player -see if you like the base unit and carts first. Make sure that you put the time into each game you get, to thoroughly try to enjoy each title before you either give up or get board with it- if that happens to you, before you cast your verdict on the Jaguar. Be advised most Jaguar games are TOUGH! and require a lot of effort to finish or to get a really high score. It may look like it but the Jag really is not a childs' game system. I'm a Jaguar fan and I have been since 1994, it takes a special breed to love the Jaguar, most people hate the Jaguar and complain about the controllers or shitter games. People's reviews and opinions on Jaguar stuff mean nothing though, (they are merely entertaining to read) because the only opinion that matters is YOUR opinion not your friends' opinions of Jag or the people on this board, because you will be playing it and only you can say if you like it. +save2600 #5 Posted February 21, 2010 (edited) Ovalbugmann put it very succinctly. Not much to add here 'cept if you decide to take the plunge, I'd highly recommend getting yourself a rotary controller or two for Tempest 2K. That's makes gaming on the Jaguar that much more of a unique experience and an obvious enhancement to an already kick ass game! Oh - and be sure to get at least an A/V connector for it to hook to your stereo or external speakers. Edited February 21, 2010 by save2600
+TrekMD #6 Posted February 22, 2010 As someone who recently got a Jaguar and who has been increasing his "collection" of games, I have been impressed with the system and think it is unfortunate that we don't see more homebrews for the system. Pyro, if you end up buying one, try to use it with at least the A/V cables and not the regular video game connector. The quality of the image is better (if you can use SuperVideo, even better). I looked through a couple of different sites for game reviews and started by purchasing the games that had better ratings. You may want to do something like that. Atari Age has a list of the games for the system and there are links to reviews you can look at. So, follow Ovalbugmann's advice and get a cheaper unboxed unit on e-bay and then take it from there. kgenthe #7 Posted February 22, 2010 (edited) I have been thinking for a while about purchasing a jaguar but is it worth it. were there many good games released for it or was there only the handful we have all heard about before? I think for most gamers/collectors, the Jaguar offers at least a dozen games good enough to warrant a purchase (in addition to the standard Doom/AvP/Tempest). There are some terrible games for sure, the system failed for a reason. But in retrospect, paying $15 or less for a majority of the games available (opposed to $50+ new 15 years ago), make it for a decent system for collectors and retro gamers looking for a new experience. Yeah.. a long list could me made of what "did in" the jag and atari...sadly probably everything on that list is accurate. But... the jag is fun... What gets it for me... is I remember those 1st basic polygon games & the jag took it another level with games that were 3D, but still played like 16-bit games, fun & basic, but challenging. Tempest alone is worth owning the jag! If your a collector, its worth collecting, as you can nab a jag & some of the good games loose with no bx & spend about the same as One PS3 game! Not bad for game collecting
Astropuff #10 Posted February 22, 2010 i tell you what T2K and Avp and even doom are worth the system alone. If you buy one and you like it great welcome to the party. If not Im sure you will be able to get your money back out of it. Really what do you have to lose if you dont like it. And just one note. People eithe love it or hate it not much inbetween. Good luck with your desicion.
Gabsters89 #11 Posted February 22, 2010 I completely agree with what everyone has said so far about collecting for the Jag, but there's one thing I feel must be added. If by collecting you mean to get the console and eventually get all of the games released for it(I feel like there were 50-some odd commercial releases), you can run into some problems. Most of the late released titles are quite rare and rack up a good chunk of change on eBay... For example I just won 3 bids for 3 games, Atari Karts, Rayman, and Double Dragon V(First two are kind of hard to find), and I paid over 100 bucks. Some of the harder to get games are good(Rayman, Worms), but some suck terribly(I'm looking at you, Air Cars). And if you intend to get some of the homebrew titles, then really prepare to open your wallet up. The only one I'm looking at is the moment is Total Carnage, which goes for 89.95 USD. Just a fair warning.

kgenthe #13 Posted February 22, 2010 yeah these are pricey but there is plenty someone could get to try the system out and get started collecting for a lot less. Its about have fun any way. I agree. You can easily get some decent brand new sealed games for cheap, like Iron Soldier, Super Burnout, Zool 2, and Val d'Isere. Other solid titles can be had for a decent price with a little patience as well, like Raiden, Doom, Power Drive Rally, and Tempest 2000. Things like Atari Karts, Rayman, and Alien vs. Predator start to get a bit pricey, but aren't required to get enjoyment out of the platform.

Austin #19 Posted February 25, 2010 (edited) The Jaguar is a good system because it has a high ratio of good-to-bad games. It doesn't have a huge library, but fortunately a majority of it consists of good games, or games that are at least "enjoyable-enough". It doesn't have dozens of AAA titles, but it has a lot of games that are still generally fun to play today, even if they don't impress or push the hardware, and as stated before, many of them can be had fairly cheap. As far as power, figure out what standard Australia uses. If it's not what the US (NTSC) or Europe (PAL) uses, then do some research and figure out what you need to convert the power and video signals of each one. coyo5050 #21 Posted March 1, 2010 Bunch of good guys on Jag Sector, helped me get a skunkboard. Fascinating system that got me back in to classic games. It is easily the most unique experience, more so since I remember the commercials as a kid. Playing the protos on that system is the most fun for me thinking about what might have been, but that's a whole nother topic! The system gets the most attention from my friends aside from the original NES, they all know the Atari name very well but many never heard of the system. A handful of great games worth picking up. kevincal #22 Posted March 1, 2010 There is just something so cool and unique about the Jag. The name itself, Jaguar, oozes coolness. The system looks awesome. The packaging looks awesome, black with colorful logos. The controller is quirky and cool, comfortable. The overlays are neat. I dunno, it's just a neat system all around. The best tip for collecting the Jag... Buy big lots on ebay and you end up paying more like $5 per game instead of $10 per game you would pay if you buy them individually. Sometimes you can do so well that you end up with free games.
