WTD: Older Dos compatible pci audio & video card

Recommended Posts

Looking to buy a audio & video card for older dos and windows 95 gaming.

I only have pci slots so that is the only type I am looking for.

for sound I would like to get a sound blaster pro or sound blaster 16 but if there is better out there please correct me as I have not been into older games parts for some time and forgot whats good and whats not for the older systems.

for the video card I was think a 8mb

my onboard video is 8mb but I do have a trident 4mb but I think a 8mb would be the best but this is another part need suggestions on as I have no clue on what cards are good for both windows 95 & dos in 8mb

I also onlt want cards that come with drivers

i have a sound blaster live! PCi ct4780 and I have downloaded driver after driver for 3 day's now and none of them work so I am done bothering with that driver goofy incompatible peice of junk lol.

I don't even know if they made a SB Pro or SB 16 in PCI. In one of my old PCs I still have an SB AWE-64, which is an ISA card :!: It has built-in wavetable and memory to support it, which gives good wavetable sound, plus supports spectacular wavetable using the PC's memory to store the sounds - breathtaking - used real piano samples, etc.

Anyway, if you need a PCI SoundBlaster, they may have made a PCI version of the AWE-64, my ISA version supported DOS/Win9X; or else look for early SoundBlaster Audigy cards. Hopefully they still supported DOS/Win9X on that card.

Thanks for the info:

They do make the pro and 16 in pci.

I also checked into the awe-64D and there is a pci version but apperantly it was based more for window's and was stripped down alot of the dos utilty's where the is a big difference in the two wich was a bmmer becuaseI fund a good deal on one.

I just changed my mobo drivers for the onboard sound and video and I believe everything is working good finally but I still would like to get a audio and video card to make it that much better or at least I am hoping.

what going on now is the dos games look good but the win 98 apps will only go 16 colors no 256 no 16-bit 24-bit and no 32-bit so I assume the onboard is limited or the video drivers for it are goofy now.

Looks like I missed the party. I've got quite a few SoundBlaster and Voodoo cards lying about. I've got at least one Voodoo 3 2000 PCI, maybe a couple of them. I've also got a Sound Blaster Live! which has some support for DOS games and is excellent under Windows 98.

I don't ever recall seeing a motherboard that had only PCI slots, though, and no ISA or AGP slots. My first computer had one shared PCI/ISA slot and two ISA only slots. Of course it was old enough to have half the RAM soldered to the hybrid AT/ATX motherboard, too. :o

The Voodoo 3 will make short work of that Rage 3D card. Drivers are not too difficult to find, so long as you download a set before pulling the Rage (or get them with a different computer). If you want one of the Voodoo 3 cards, shoot me a PM and I will see which ones I have.

Bump that, here's what I've got:

PCI

Radeon 7000 32MB, has retail box and driver disk

Voodoo 3 2000 PCI, been used within the last six months

Sound Blaster Live!, untested

AGP

Voodoo 3 3500 (?), has S-video out and VGA out, untested

ISA:

Sound Blaster AWE64 Value, couple different boards actually, been years since I tested them (there are three of them)

want some SDRAM to go with that computer?

Just pay shipping if you want some of this stuff.

BTW, these are all first party cards, no PowerColor or Sapphire or anything like that.
