No, you don't even need battery installed to play with wall outlet.

Compatibility problem work around found. (Using a Version 2 more than likely works on version 1)

 

I have to have a look at Mario RPG, Street fighter Alpha and Kirby Superstar *all of which worked on my version 1 unit* which people have had problems with. Also see if I can get Super Wrestlemania and see if I can figure out a fix as well.
