coze
Hello all, I'm in a position to get a megafile 60 and Vortex HD plus 40. What I'm wondering is if the drives inside these are legacy SCSI drives ? So that I can replace the drive with a newer SCSI drive or maybe even a SCSI-IDE-CF adapter ? Also how much do you think are these worth ? many thanks, CoZe

I'd pull its cover and look for myself. (or since you're attempting to buy it, ask the seller to) As far as price goes, I wouldn't pay a lot for either. MR*Atari*
Vortex is just like the megafile and is from the same era, it uses an MFM drive as i had one, not only that the Vortex needs special, software, you CANNOT use any other software than vortex to run it like the megafile it's probably the worst type of hard drive you can get for the atari just don't pay too much.... dinosaur
The MegaFile 60 is actually a RLL drive:Seagate ST277R-26 sectors per track. http://stason.org/TULARC/pc/hard-drives-hdd/seagate/ST277R-1-66MB-5-25-HH-RLL-ST412.html

I wasn't sure. I knew they weren't SCSI though. Now the SH and the Megafile 44 were different beasts, right? I mean if you're lucky with the combination, you can put the right kind of SCSI in those, I think.
coze
damn, there goes my dreams of CF modded megafiles but I may get them anyway just for the sake of playing with them. I can buy megafile 60for 5$, vortex plus 40 for 5$, mega st 2 with vortex 40 for 25$, mega st 4 bare unit for 25$, mega st 4 with new keyboard (french layout) for 30 $, mega st 4 (german roms) for 10$, which ones do you think are a bargain ? I already have a 1040 STe, can a Mega ST 4 offer anything that I can't do with my STe ? Edited February 26, 2010 by coze

coze
yup, I'ld buy them all too, but one of the downsides of living in japan is that living space is so ****ing small. I can't really afford to keep any retro stuff that I won't ever use (I already have a lot). still puzzled about these stuff, I think I'm gonna get the megafile (and sell it again later) and maybe a mega st. oky2000
I have a boxed Megafile 30 in the UK to sell if anyone is interested in such a thing. What price are we looking at with P&P? Make me an offer for the unit, postage is fixed at £12 via 48hour Parcelforce tracked service (requirement of PayPal to have tracked dispatch methods) which is cost price. I also have a non-Atari branded 100mb external hard drive for any ST too while I am here
