tz101 #1 Posted March 3, 2010 I sometimes like the fact that thrift store game carts have saved games on them, especially if the person got really far into the game. But most times I erase any saved games from thrift finds because I want to experience all the earlier levels. Anyone else play the game saves from thrift store finds? I don't usually play them because the last thing I want to do is play Dragon Warrior II as a female named Yaz... but I do always at least check them out just to see what they've got and where they are... tz101 #4 Posted March 3, 2010 I always check them out.....lol. Then i start my own game cuz usually im lost. Y, this is usually the case with me too. I got Dragon Warrior II for NES and its saved at a level where I don't know what's going on. May play around with it a little bit at that level, but will most likely restart at the beginning. madhatter667 #5 Posted March 3, 2010 Depends. Often I will check out a save just to see the kind of progress the last owner made. Sometimes, if it was significant, I don't erase it. I usually do though, as the games is "new" to me, so I want a clean slate. Just a quirk that I see is largely shared.
shadow460 #6 Posted March 3, 2010 (edited) If it's on a cart, I'll check it out and then erase it. If it's on a memory card, I archive it and then erase everything on the card. finding saves on older carts is a good thing, though. It lets you know that the save battery has not died. Yet anyway. fiddlepaddle #7 Posted March 3, 2010 I don't play most games very long, so it's cool to check out the higher levels that I'd probably never get into. It's one reason I like finding N64 and PS1 memory packs; that way I can see what other people were doing. I have one cart for the Gameboy that I haven't been able to start, because of the password in the memory: mary kate & ashley pocket planner. I guess I could take the battery out, but always thought it might be interesting to see the personal notes of some twelve year old girl who's probably about thirty now. I don't usually play them because the last thing I want to do is play Dragon Warrior II as a female named Yaz... but I do always at least check them out just to see what they've got and where they are... Interestingly enough... I bought Dragon Warrior 2 back in the day... (I think I was in middle school). I found some sort of bug in the programming, and my save game was rather messed up. What ended up happening was that I was stuck in a situation where an NPC was stuck in a loop, and I couldn't get out... I think I was stuck in a small cave or something. They asked me to mail in the game to ENIX, so I did... I got it back like a month later, and it appears as though they had re-created my save game, but I was in town, with all the people I had, and all the items, but a few other things. It looked like maybe they started the game over, or something??! And then just averaged out my money and stuff... It was weird. I don't think a game company would EVER do this now... to me, it seems like the weirdest, but best customer service I've ever had. I got really close to beating the game, but never got around to it. I sold everything... all my nintendo stuff when I was like 16... more interested in cars and boobs. I've since bought most of that stuff back though... doubleminor #9 Posted March 3, 2010 I start from scratch for a couple of reasons: so the game may not spoil me during an important part, and to simply start from the beginning and call the save my own.
Ze_ro #10 Posted March 3, 2010 Alas! A forgotten warrior, left to wallow in obscurity... finally slain by a newcomer who never even knew the battles the hero had fought, or the treasures found. An ignominious death for one who had, in times long since past, been loved as a saviour of the world, is it not? But all things must pass, and time will forget even the bravest of adventurers... for there are newcomers who will rise to face the challenges ahead! --Zero
Video #11 Posted March 3, 2010 I always check out the saves. If it's a device with multiple slots, I'll keep the save (like Zelda games) but if it's only got one, it's still cool to see where it is before I start a new game. Memory cards are awesome though, most have ways of being archived, so I useually save everything, even other people's stuff, and then I have it dumped on my computer somewhere for all eternity MWAHAHAHA!!! Along those lines I'll usually browse any hard drives I purchase from a thrift shop. I generally save the music. I've gotten plenty of boy band and cheesy rap songs that way. jferio #14 Posted March 4, 2010 I always delete... maybe checking to see if there's a good indicator of the progress made like a level number, but overall, I prefer to start from scratch unless it's a game that's mostly made of unlockable characters and costumes. figgler #15 Posted March 6, 2010 Memory cards and cartridges alike I dump completely right away without even looking at them if I can. I too like to make the game my own and some strangers' saves in carts makes games look like whores
DeadlyDiskKun #16 Posted March 6, 2010 Depends on how far the save is into the game, otherwise no.
JohnnyBlaze #17 Posted March 6, 2010 Yeah, I usually check them out. I don't usually play them because the last thing I want to do is play Dragon Warrior II as a female named Yaz... Are you fuckin' serious?! Someone named their character after a period pill? Anyways, it depends. I look for games with saves. That means that the battery is good because if it wasn't, the save wouldn't be there. I play it sometimes if it's where I left off when I had the cart, but otherwise I start from scratch.
