I finally got out a real camera and took some pictures of my newly set-up GARAGECADE! Lookin' nice so far! I'll post updates as things continue, I have some cooler plans to get forward with. Right now it's a 1942, Asteroids, and Space Invaders with my Atari Lamp lighting up the corner (there will be something extra special built in conjunction with the lamp there!) and starting my awesome posters/prints! Huzzah!

I have a fridge that needs to go down here for some beer-age and some food-age, but moving it is a pain and we will be moving houses soon. But so far I like it! Got the ex-Linuxbox (back to Windoze, for some reason Linux didn't like the basement) running some Pandora now for some infinite tunes and a stereo next to it with some LPs of some kickass bands like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and AC/DC of course....turning into monkey's awesome hangout! Of course the '79 Corvette in the background (not pictured) really helps it be fun too

Mirage makes a guest appearance on the computer :) and the lamp needs some fixin' still but looks really good. I am making official Monkey Lamp #1 for Al as soon as my eBay carts show up and will put a lot more effort into that, that product will look a TON better. Also need to put T-molding on those 1942 & asteroids cabs and Bondo/paint those wood spots on Asteroids and Space Invaders (the SI ones are tiny, but annoy me nonetheless). I also have a whiteboard for all my high scores! Everything is on a single power strip so it's just hit one switch and it all turns on, very convenient!

All I'm missing is a pinball.....anyone want to help me out with that?

My wife actually went along with me to pick them all up! I was surprised she was supportive, I thought I would get a "death glare" when she found out (I tried to keep my scheme secret for a month). She played her first arcade game ever when they showed up! She hasn't tried 1942 or Asteroids yet but she absolutely loves Space Invaders. Her high score is 1020  she's still learning. But she seems to have fun playing, which is great! I think she would love Centipede or Pac/Ms. Pac so I might be getting those next.

I have tons to do. Need to buy better speakers for the stereo and mount them, then assemble my corner assembly plan (a secret for now), then add more posters and whatnot, but it's a great start!

I wish I could go back to feeling that awe and amazement at something so simple as Space Invaders and only have a high score of 1020. I actually envy her!

Ironically Space Invaders is probably my favorite machine now, at least in concept. 1942 will always be my all-time favorite forever, but actually owning a Space Invaders cab.....it's such a cool cabinet! The blacklight in the back, the mounted monitor on the mirror, the strips of plastic to make colors, the backlit background.....that's just so awesome how they did what they did with it. It just amazes me every time how creative Taito/Midway were in creating that cabinet. The art is cool, the whole scheme is just amazing....probably one of the coolest games out there.

Cool, didnt know the Space Invaders cab had a blacklight in it, probably because these games are never in arcades anymore. Because when you think arcade games this is what you think straight away isnt it not Mario kart arcade Gp and all this crap arcades should have more classic cab. :x

Nice! I would recommend turning the 1942 in to a 60 in 1 multicade. the 60 in 1 PCB has 1942 on it so it is a win win! ;)

Hell no! That was my absolute #1 favorite arcade growing up! That baby is staying dedicated! :P :D

It is already a conversion though, Your Space Invaders and Asteroids are dedicated. I don't think they made dedicated 1942 machines, I think they were just conversion kits. That is a former STERN cabinet painted black. Possibly a Berzerk or a Scramble, but they made so many who knows what it once was. If you look inside the cabinet, around the coin door for stickers or maybe in back on the monitor sometimes there will be some printed evidence of what it formally was. Here is a pic of a Scramble, that would be my guess...

Sometimes you can find old manuals/schematics and crap in the back also that will show what it's former game was.

Did they make Berzerk in those cabinets? The one I had was like all the ones I've seen with the slide-out board door on the left side of the front panel. Like this:

Otherwise, it's probably the same design. I'd second it probably having been a Scramble cabinet. I'd also second on using 60-in-1, but do the research on those first to see if 1942 has sound issues, as that seems to be an issue with some games on those boards. If so, I'd keep the dedicated board in it for sure since it's your fave! Nothing wrong with keeping it dedicated either way though.

Really? Wow! I never knew that. I thought Capcom made original dedicated 1942s and they licensed through Romstar in the US. Cool! I am still keeping it at just 1942 though :)

I will have to open it up and take a look today! I need to buy locks for the rear doors anyway, so when I'm doing that I'll dig around in back and see if I can find anything. It's a brand new monitor so I don't think there will be any info near it, but there might be something on the back of the cabinet itself. Very cool!

I think you're right, (other) CC....it has a lot of very similar characteristics to Scramble, so I'm going to third the motion that it was likely an original Scramble cab. Nifty little piece of history I never knew! I really know nothing about arcade games, having just played them growing up, and these are the first I've ever owned, so I definitely am lacking in the knowledge department. Thanks for schooling me, neat to find out about that!

Yeah, you are right on that. I thought they were the same but they are not. Probably because I have never owned a Berzerk but have had several other Sterns :)

Yeah, I was thinking of 1943 as a conversion only, man I am off today - lol, 1942 is still mostly only found as a conversion and yours definetily is. There might be a few dedicated ones floating around, but most are conversions. Since yours is a 1942 and not a 1943 it is also a unique pinout so I would now recommend you do NOT make it a multicade unless you want to spend the weekend re wiring the cabinet to JAMMA pinout. If it was already JAMMA you just plug the PCB in and play, easy as playing an NES game. By the way, if you get bored buy some grafitti remover and use it on the side of your game. That should make the old side art visable, you will never be able to bring it back to it's former glory but you will at least be able to see what it was, then you can just spraypaint it black again for about $3 ;)

My goal is to beat the TG world record in 1942. 13 million + change! HOLY SH&^ that's going to be hard. My highest is 795,860 and that was about a 45 minute long game or so. I have now stopped 'playing' 1942 and am basically now just testing the acoustic capabilities of my garage for certain 4-letter words. I got to 617,650 today and uttered a nice long string of them when my last plane exploded. Last Stage #18 IIRC.

Last Stage #28 is by far the 'hardest' in terms of difficulty ramping. You cruise right along and then usually lose 2 planes on that level alone.....

I need to buy a frame for ATARI CITY but it's not a standard frame size! Now that I don't have to work I have time to make a matte for it. I made extra sure to staple just outside the corners so there's no holes when I take it down :D

Look on craigslist for a pair of Cerwin Vegas...

You can usually find them pretty cheap there. Sometime a REALLY nice deal.

Posters: Grab the Dungeon poster from the AtariAge Store. Beautiful poster!

The artwork of the Space Invaders cab is probably one of my favorites of all time. I've always loved the look of it!
