Different AC Adapter?

Recommended Posts

I have a "Darth Vader" colored 2600 and am currently using an ac adapter that has the input of 120vAC, 60Hz, and 11w. Later, I got a lot of 2600 Games+Controllers+AC Adapter+Video Cables. The AC Adapter That came with it is identical except for the voltage. This ones input says 110-130V AC, 60Hz, and 12w. both outputs are the same. the both say 9V. but what is that AC adapter that came with the lot? Is it a pal Adapter? Is it designed for the 6 switch system or "woody"? Is it safe to use it on my Vader One??? They also both are by Atari.

Help Me!!!

Thanks!

Are you sure?

the extra watt wont kill my 2600 and it will have the proper voltage to run it?

I may not even use it though. im just curious in case i need to replace my current one

Yep. Your Atari will only draw as much current as it needs. As long as the minimum current and rated DC voltage are met then it will be happy.

In this case they are both outputting 9V DC. The AC voltage you are reading off the power supply is the voltage coming out of your wall socket. The power adapter converts that into DC voltage by stepping down, recitifying, and then filtering the sine wave.

In short both adapters will work, and extra Wattage won't kill your Atari. It'll just take the current it needs.

If you don't believe Omegamatrix and for some reason believe me, I agree with what he said. :)

Thirded.

You now have a multitude of unanimous opinions from disparate sources. In journalism, that's permission to print. For you, it's permission to sleep soundly, knowing that your Atari will enjoy being supplied by either of those adapters. :)

ok

So should i use it?

or should i continue to use my current one and keep it for a spare?

Yes.

Yes.

the grid is not a rock solid absolute voltage

it varies from 110-120 and if an air conditioner is running near you then cuts off the voltage can spike up to 130

i think the sticker is trying to nip a customer service call in the bud

since many people call the voltage 110 and their dryer uses 220 but often its 120v and 240 for the double voltage

its really a conspiracy i tells ya

they jack the voltage up to 120 and that causes all your stuff to use 5% more energy if they knocked it back down to 110 everything would still work fine and use a little less power but if someones air conditioner kicks on then the voltage may drop to 100 and some things may brownout

It doesn't matter. Use the one you want; both are adequate to the task, and neither are "overpowered" for it.

So its just the same adapter but just with a different label?

I don't think anyone here said that.

Why is a duck?

The adapter is different because it is different. However, it's different in ways that are absolutely meaningless for your application.

Some very knowledgeable people (and I) have agreed that it's okay to use. If you want to start talking about ohm's law and deeper technical explanations there are plenty of people around here who can do that if you're honestly looking to learn. If you don't care about that but are still not comfortable using it, I'd recommend that you throw it out or donate it somewhere to ease your mind.
