Perfect Dark XBLA Released

Recommended Posts

Just picked up Perfect Dark on XBLA. Anyone have any thoughts on it ? My first impressions are good, but there are some lighting annoyances. For instance there is no way to turn down the brightness in the game. When you walk past lights they blind the whole screen. Likewise some areas are too dark, and shouldn't require the nightvision goggles. My other annoyance is the radiation effects. If you walk into a room with radiation it blurs the screen so terribly that I have a headache from it. Reminds me of terrible motion sickness. Well worth the 800, but could be better. The best out of the block party offerings.

I still own the original Nintendo 64 version but I really like the 360 port. It's a little strange having the yellow buttons mapped to the other stick on the 360 controller, but I'm getting use to it. I've already logged a couple hours of game play just exploring things to see how they compare to the original version.

So what do I really like about this 360 port? I like the Combat Simulator and how they also went from 30 frames per second to 60. That helped a lot IMHO. It seems that they fixed up some of the graphics pretty nicely, but the walls and textures still seem a little N64ish to me, but as mentioned above, this is worth the 800 MS points.

I think a lot of people into First Person Shooters will like this even if they haven't already experienced the N64 version, but keep in mind that this is a 10 year old game, so even with the graphics and frame rates improved, it won't look like COD or anything, but again, it's worth the 800 points.

To be honest, I played the trial version of PD and wasn't impressed. If I need a cheap FPS fix, I'll stick with Serious Sam (which I've had a blast with).

I'm curious what you weren't impressed with? Gameplay, controls, graphics, story and/or mission objectives?

Like I had said in my comment above, you need to keep in mind that Perfect Dark is a 10 year old game with only the graphics, frame rates improved and some added features (achievements, online play, etc.) to make it more XBLA friendly, so if you haven't played PD on the N64, you shouldn't go into it expecting COD or anything.

I guess it's like the original Pac-Man for the 2600, some people like it (I do) and others don't :)

I never played the original so I had no nostalgia. I played through the demo level and then deleted it. It was probably pretty cool when it originally came out.

I never played it on the N64 (even though I have 3 new copies!) but I played this yesterday and had a blast with it. I especially like the different tasks depending on the difficulty level you choose.

I was hoping they would fix that annoying lighting. It only occurs on the first section from what I remember.

Is the price gonna stay at 800? I might not be able to get it until next week.

so I got XBLA version yesterday.

man is this remake awesome!

I loved N64 original back in the day but framerate was so awful it was making game unplayable at times.

this time framerate is silky smooth(60 frames per second), dolby surround in 5.1, graphics in full 1080, looks and feels remarkably good.

I've played four missions on hardest difficulty(really you'll get most out of it on secret agent because missions are much more complex and you won't breeze through it like you would on agent).

I got used to controls in a snap (aiming cursor is actually essential if you're going for headshots, etc...).

so what else there is to say, it's what I've expected and game delivered it in spades.

N64 weighed 32mb's, XBLA version is 240mb's, - that should give you good indication of how much love and work went into it.

I wish Nintendo treated their Virtual Console releases this way.

It's hard to believe that decade old title puts majority of currently released shooters to shame in terms of options, complexity for single player and multiplayer modes.

System seller for sure (just the way Banjo Kazooie and Tooie remakes were, if you care about having these games in best quality possible).

Trilogy is complete, now we need Conker(not live and reloaded), Killer Instincts, Jet Force Gemini, Battletoads, Blast Corps and we're set ^^
