sandmountainslim #1 Posted March 26, 2010 It FINALLY happened! After all these years my Vader which I got for my birthday in 1982 has been packed nicely and stored in the top of my bedroom closed. I did manage to play a bit of the new copy of Evil Magician Returns that I got today on it before sending it into retirement Why am I punishing my VCS? I'm not! I am simply giving it a well deserved retirement. In recent times I have found that I play Atari games on Stella about 20 to 1 compared to the actual console so I decided to make some extra room in my bedroom and just give Stella the full workload of my Atari time since it has been handling the bulk of it for so long now. Score one for emulation if anyone is keeping count. Wp
akator #2 Posted March 26, 2010 I run into this dilemma pretty often. I love original gaming and computer hardware, or else I wouldn't keep/collect it. Even so, I go through weeks and even months (gasp) when all of my classic gaming is emulated. There's the issue of the less reliable hardware. For several systems, it was so much time and money to get decent condition and working hardware that it's almost like I'm afraid to actually use it for fear of something crapping out. I find myself emulating those pretty often. Lastly, there's a financial issue. I've got a lot of the more common games, now I find myself looking for the less popular and more expensive titles. Emulation helps weed out the stuff I shouldn't buy because I'm never going to play it.
sandmountainslim #3 Posted March 26, 2010 Yeah I understand with the hardware problems also. My Vader has trouble playing certain games that the 6 switch I have plays just fine. It's a bit touchy at times. I am not giving up buying and collecting carts even though my machine is packed up. I can still play 'em on Stella and buy 'em for my collection so fear not, homebrewers!! lol Wp
AtariLeaf #4 Posted March 26, 2010 Although I love playing games on my hardware, I've been loving the emulation on the Dreamcast lately. I've been doing all my NES gaming through it and its great. Atari, not so much but for some systems its fantastic.
Trinity #5 Posted March 26, 2010 I need to play on the hardware... Stella is nice, But I like to get the ol' MOS 6507 warmed up to truly say, I played Atari today. My e6600 has better things to do...
Tr3vor #6 Posted March 26, 2010 i like emulation for the rare games that i will probably never actually get to play for real. i like to play my atari when i feel like playing atari games, not on the emulator. its like that atari times article that says emulation is like masturbation, its not as good as the real thing. besides, if you break anything, the most of what it will cost you is probably around 10$ and maybe you might have to open it up. i guess its different for you, when i play the atari, its like authentic gameplay with the controllers and stuff, and emulation has its difficulty ramped up due to the keyboard. keybord is good for modern games like half life2, but not atari games. ls650 #7 Posted March 26, 2010 Aw, I think that's sad. I sometimes run Stella to quickly check a new homebrew beta but now that I have a Harmony cart I am playing more 2600 than ever!

Cliff Friedel #9 Posted March 27, 2010 Aw, I think that's sad. I sometimes run Stella to quickly check a new homebrew beta but now that I have a Harmony cart I am playing more 2600 than ever! Me too. That way I can save the carts and can still play a real atari, on a real TV. Also lets me play games I homebrew myself. Harmony cart is the best.
