My Air Raid Auction Update

Just saw this on CNN, but I guess everyone did.

What will be funny about the flood you talk about Uzamaki, is how starting prices will go up on future auctions, and Joe Average just won't understand why no one will buy his Pac-man cartridge for $20... "but its ET?!?! I heard it was famous, so it should be worth something, right?"

Great to see the CNN article.

Actually I cringed when I saw the CNN story. When a hobby gets this kind of national attention because of a high selling price it tends to attract 'the wrong kind of people'. I suspect we'll start seeing an increase in scammers and clueless people trying to cash to make a quick buck. Sigh.

I was just thinking the same thing.

I like how the summary on the side says:

"Expert declared it authentic; Sandlin put the game up for auction, gets $31,6000"

Albert is now officially an "Expert".

Grats!! icon_smile.gif

Just so long as Albert doesn't go around calling himself an expert.

I've always considered self-proclaimed experts to be those who's arrogance fool the stupid.

There's always more to learn. Even in game collecting.

Just for the record, I never called myself an expert during all of this. I'm not sure where that came from. icon_ponder.gif

TBH I never thought you did. I had the same done to me years ago. I was once called a computer expert in the media. Heck, I was still at University at the time. icon_rolleyes.gif

What's wrong with being an expert? You're more familiar with the arcana of classic games than the general population, so you'd certainly qualify.

Being an expert on something doesn't mean you don't keep learning. It just means having extraordinary knowledge and experience in a certain field.

EXPERT! EXPERT!

don't let us down, new messiah, or our confusion and betrayal will become a deadly game of... oh, let's say frogger.

In my experience, a lot of people assume atari games are worth a lot because they're old already. There's a lady at the flea market near here with ten carts that have been there for more than ten years because she was more than ten dollars each for them - basic math is the rarest one, the others are all R1's from Atarisoft.

I bought a roman coin once for a dollar - it's more than two thousand years old, so as a child I felt it must have been valuable. I guess they were just about as common as Combat carts back then and even more durable, so it ended up being worth about a dollar. This lady never got that message.

I smiled when I saw this on CNN - but I did cringe a bit when reading some of the comments below. Perhaps if those folks had read this thread they might have a bit more perspective on this whole thing. Although I guess I can relate, having overheard two people talking about the thousands they had spent on old fishing lures. Makes no sense to me, but I guess that's the beauty of life - that we all have different things that turn us on. And yea, Room 34, things have changed since the old days - I do miss the tight knit community we had back then - but I have been enjoying reading all the wonderful comments from the "noobs" (as it were.) We all were new to everything at one time. I do miss the pirate threads however, and does anyone remember the "cross-over week" with digital press and "jet-gate"? Good times...

As a final thought, I'm just glad that we've got all sorts of new people to become friends with because of this. Makes me wanna organize some sort of atari fest up here in NW Indiana.

I'd show up from down here in Southern Indiana if I could! That would rock...I've considered doing the same thing, if anything, just to see what kind of interested I could drum up here in the Hoosier state! I may start a thread somewhere to see who else in IN is a Atari collector/enthusiast.

Dr. Galaga lives a few blocks away from me... with his bad-ass "Galaga" and "Asteroids" arcade games... *sigh*... well, I've got "Marble Madness", "Final Fight", "Bagman" and a killer Ms. Pac cocktail table...

Well put. Unfortunately the media has a habit of blowing things up to extraordinary lengths. The word 'expert' is overused. From my own experience, far too many people are put forward as experts when they most certainly don't know more than others in their field. One prime example is 'expert' witnesses - the most dangerous profession in the world is the psychiatric profession. It's full of 'experts' who think they know everything about certain conditions ... yet never having gone through those conditions themselves then it's clear they actually know very little.

My original post was meant to be tongue-in-cheek. I would certainly cast Albert and Curt Vendel as experts on their very exclusive field. icon_smile.gif

And now the big time press gets the story...

Atari on CNN = the awesomeness.

Hey, I took that crappy picture! :D

I totally agree. Dr. Amen who wrote Change Your Brain Change Your Life wrote that psychiatrists are the only medical specialists who rarely look at the organ they treat. They prescribe medications for behavioral problems without ordering brain scans to see how the brain functions or what areas are abnormal. That really opened my eyes.

Oops, I guess I'm getting off topic here! I went to an apartment warming party the night the Air Raid auction closed and the theme of the party coincidentally was aviation because the host lived on the third floor on a hill with a nice view of Austin. I thought that made it very appropriate to bring up the auction in conversation.
