PFG 9000 #1 Posted April 2, 2010 Recently I acquired a Paperboy game card. I hadn't played Paperboy since I was a young boy wandering around the Roller-Rink ( ) 20-some years ago, but I was looking forward to trying the Lynx version. I've played it several times now, but the collision detection is just killing me! Obviously I've grown up with older games, and I have no difficulty with most of the Lynx's arcade conversions, but I just can't get over the hit detection in this one. I frequently crash into items when there's several pixels of space to spare. The game seems incredibly solid except for this one little problem. But when I look up reviews for the game, everybody praises it and rates it highly. Does anybody else have this issue? If not...anybody want to talk about Paperboy? +FujiSkunk #2 Posted April 2, 2010 (edited) I don't remember an exact issue with collision detection, but then it's been a while since I've played the Lynx version. In general, though, I consider this release of Paperboy to be a disappointment. After what they did with the BMX event in California Games, it amazes me just how choppy the animation in Paperboy really is. The music also leaves a lot to be desired. Paperboy definitely isn't a highlight of the Lynx catalog, in my humble opinion. Edited April 2, 2010 by FujiSkunk
The_Laird #3 Posted April 2, 2010 It was pretty much a straight port of the ST version even the copyright mentions this as is references Elite who did the the ST version.
Atari_afternoon #4 Posted October 7, 2010 I must say I find the Lynx "Paperboy extremely playable The Gameboy "Paperboy" is bad IMO but it was a good training! The only point where I frequently crash is the crossing with the two race cars.
Horst #5 Posted October 9, 2010 Yes its a little 'off' but once you get used to it, its a great port. Just keep in mind that 2 pixels=collision, stay 3 pixels away If you put headphones on the music is much better.
Armonigann #6 Posted October 9, 2010 I can't really speak on the lynx version. But I do know that the SMS version sucks bad IMO. Terrible hit detection, glitched scrolling, ear bleeding music the loops over and over, and you can barely hit anything except for the houses...But, it looks great. SMS and NES are quite awful. ST and Lynx are the best arcade ports. Paperboy played on Handy emulator looks pretty good.
Armonigann #8 Posted October 10, 2010 I actually LOVE the nes version. Looks like shit all the hell but plays great! Wish the 7800 had a version.
+FujiSkunk #9 Posted October 11, 2010 ST and Lynx are the best arcade ports. The Genesis port would like a word with you. I also think the NES version is better than the Lynx version, if only because of the Lynx's stuttering scrolling. The Commodore 64 version is also surprisingly good, once you get used to a few quirks that actually help give the port its own unique charm.
