I have 7 Dreamcast VMUs and 3 Rumble Packs--POLL ADDED!

How many Dreamcast VMUs do you have?

19 members have voted

  1. 1. How many Dreamcast VMUs do you have?

  2. 2. Do you sell VMUs along with systems or keep them?

    • Sell'em! How many VMUs does one person need?!
    • Keep'em! They are fun little things and I need the save space.
    • What the heck is a VMU?
  3. 3. How many of your VMUs have working batteries?

    • All of them.
    • None of them.
    • Who knows, I never use them.
    • Some do, some don't.
    • I don't have any of these VMU things. This is a dumb poll.

I know this is a silly topic, but I am feeling silly. Getting ready to sell a Dreamcast I yard-saled this morning and kind of automatically took the VMU out of the controller. I always do this because I think VMUs are cool so I never sell them. Just for fun I like to see the saves on them, what games people have played, etc. Plus some of the mini games are kind of fun, when I remember to keep batteries in them, that is.

Hmmm, I have never played with the poll settings before and this seems like a nice random topic! Vote away! Poll is set to PUBLIC.

LOL!! I think there's one for each Dreamcast controller here, and there's enough controllers to play close to or the maximum number of people per game. So that's either 3 or 4 stock pads, a Stinger and a Starfire Light Blaster. Plus there are probably some of those things lying about.

Some of them have batteries, but that's only because I haven't pulled them out yet. And they're dead. And they'll stay that way because I don't ever pull the VMU from the controller. All my House of the Dead 2, Confidential Mission, and other light gun saves are "on the Stinger", so to say. I think all the Smash Pack saves are on the Stinger also.

My PocketStation's battery still works great, though! :P Too bad it doesn't have the memory capacity a VMU does, though.

I rarely sell systems, and I never sell the memory devices with them. It's one thing to spend $20 on a memory card and maybe sell it for $5 a few years later, but memory devices for my Saturn, PS2 (official hard disk), and PSP simply cost too much to resell at a price I'd expect to buy them for today. Even said PocketStation falls into that category. If I sold all my PS1 and PS2 gear, I'd be keeping both PS2 hard disks (probably the LAN box, too) and the PocketStation.

Someone ought to do a poll like this in the 2600 forum for the Save Key.

EDIT: Let's give out bonus points for those who have ever traded Dreamcast game saves with just two VMU's or played a standalone game on one!

I love the standalone games--it's one of my favorite parts of them. Thanks to everyone who responded to the poll--I might make up more of these because they are kind of fun.

Well, I have 4 standard pads, one of the Madcatz controllers with the rubberized buttons, 4 of the Performance rumble paks, and at last count I had 28 VMUs 5 of the Performance memory cards, and one Performance multi-memory card. I worked at a pawn shop during the DC's heyday, and everytime we had one drop out, I'd snag the VMUs for like 99 cents. I've got a buttload of DC stuff, actually. Mouse, keyboard, 2 light guns, all sorts of crap. But, I love my DC, I'll never part with any of it!

I only have one, so I could save for Shenmue, and play with my Chao from SA. There are some pretty sweet things that can be done with them, lot of downloadable mini games out there. I bet there is a Doom port for the VMU even :P

Back in the days, I had a regular VMU and a Nexus Massive Memory Card Plus, which was one of those 8-bank deals with a button on the side to change banks. Out of 1800 blocks worth of space, I probably filled about 1500. Damn things don't hold much, and playing sports games just eats them alive.

I really think that anyone who plans on getting much use out of their Dreamcast probably needs at least 3 VMU's... unless they plan on beating one game at a time and deleting their saves often.

Keeping batteries in the things is a huge bitch though. Thank god you don't need batteries in there to maintain the save data!
