Street Fighter Alpha 2 for Saturn (US)

Recommended Posts

How much would a good price to pay for this game? they have it on ebay for around $17 shipped for a new sealed copy.

Was the saturn version better than the PS1? or about the same?

My favorite game on the Sega Saturn and the price you quoted sounds excellent to me seeing that it is mint and sealed.

A good price is whatever you are comfortably willing to pay. Think of how much use you will get out of it, and figure out if that amount of use is worth the price of admission.

Needless to say, this is a great port.

It's a fantastic port. However, I would recommend Street Fighter Collection instead, as it includes the slightly improved Street Fighter Alpha 2 Gold. Unfortunately, Street Fighter Collection will probably cost you a lot more than seventeen dollars, and the inclusion of Cammy in the versus mode probably won't be enough to justify the price.

I heard Gold is actually inferior to the original Alpha 2 due to nerfed characters.

First time I heard that!

Eh.. He probably means "nerfed" as in balance issues have been tweaked in the Gold version, something that isn't always well-looked upon in the competitive fighting game community (Also something that the casual fighting game player may not even notice).

Also, to the OP, if you have a PS2, you may want to check out the Street Fighter Alpha Anthology. It has Alpha, Alpha 2, Alpha 2 Gold, Alpha 3, and Pocket Fighter included. I haven't played it myself, but if the Street Fighter Anniversary Collection is anything to go by, these are probably close-to-perfect ports. It will also cost you the same amount of money as SFAII on the Saturn by itself.

I think it's worth mentioning that Japanese Saturn versions of both Street Fighter Zero 2 and Street Fighter Collection are cheaper than their US counterparts (and, as far as I know, no language barrier).

Alpha Anthology PS2 is awesome. Graphics are upscaled, but the games are accurate to the originals and there are some nifty options like being able to tweak the rules of the game.

Yeah, I think the reason why a Saturn version of a Capcom fighter was better than the PS1 version was due to slightly more memory in the Saturn. I've heard about slightly smoother graphics (framerate-wise) and slightly shorter load times.

The Saturn was designed especially for 2D games, with the 3D capabilities tacked on later. The Playstation was the opposite, geared toward 3D but with peripheral support for 2D that got better toward the end of the system's life. It's why Capcom's fighting games were generally better on the Saturn.

Some of the JP only fighters for the Saturn like Vampire Savior (Darkstalkers 3), X-Men Vs. Street Fighter, and Marvel Super Heroes Vs. Street Fighter were helped by an extra memory upgrade (4 megs). The difference with the smoothness is more than slight and the missing frames in games like Darkstalkers 3, Street Fighter Alpha 3, and the Capcom Vs. Games compared to Saturn or arcade is definitely noticeable.

Yeah, and if I remember right Brian a few of the "first-gen" fighters from Capcom (at least Marvel Super Heroes to memory) possibly had a ram option that smoothed out animation frames a little when said expansion was plugged in.
